TE HERENGA WAKA AHUREA - HUNTERS HAKA
Club Day was the day that our Mens teams unveiled for the first time, Te Herenga Waka Ahurea, the Hunters haka.
Following our 20th Jubilee year last year, the Committee approached Junior Coach, Matua Darcy Sullivan, on the possibility of creating a taonga for the Club in the form of a haka.
Matua Darcy and his wife, Whaea Muri, have worked tirelessly over the past 7 years, coaching Junior Hunters teams out of Te Kura Kaupapa o Nga Mokopuna in Seatoun. Coaching in full te reo Maori, Darcy has introduced many a junior Hunter to our game of rugby league and nurtured a true love for the game among our tamariki.
After holding several wananga with a group of senior mens, womens and junior players, the group developed a haka that covered the main principles that the Hunters represent:
Our connection to our city, Whanganui a Tara and the 2 taniwha of the harbour: Ngake & Whataitai;
Our connection to Te Herenga Waka Victoria University;
Our connection to each other’s diverse cultures;
Our connection to the game of rugby league that has brought us together;
Our connection to each other as players, families, supporters and community - past and present
E rere ana ngā mihi ki a Matua Darcy, ki a Whaea Muri, me te kapa i tito i te haka o tā mātou karapu. Tēnā koutou mō tēnei taonga hei ohāki mō ngā rā, mō ngā tau e heke mai nei. Nō mātou te maringanui.
Huge thanks to Matua Darcy, Whaea Muri and the Haka Roopu that created our Club haka. You have given us a taonga and created a legacy for the Club that we will forever be grateful for.
