TRAINING SESSION IDEAS
Sessions should not exceed 45 minutes. These drills are just ideas to increase skill level – you may not cover them all in one session. Coaches should demonstrate skills before getting children to do it.

Passing Skills:

1. 4 cones in a square. Children in two lines, each child has a ball in one of the lines. Passes between the 2 children between the cones. Score at end.

Run round the outside.

NOTE: Receiver should hold hands out ready to receive the ball and call for the ball. Passer shouldlook at the target, hold ball in 2 hands and pass to target.

2. Same as first drill but children in 3 lines. Passing between cones.

Dumping:

Children in 2 lines, front child with the ball. 2 people out in front as defenders (helpers/coaches). Children run out, initiate touch to defender (helpers), put ball down (plant NOT roll) and step over the ball. Run round outside to the back of the line.

Pair up – dummy:

Split children into pairs. Each pair has a ball. In a line run up, coach calls ‘touch’, runner ‘plants’ the ball. Dummy half picks up, pretends to pass, runs forward, coach calls ‘touch’, plant ball, 2nd player goes dummy, & so on & so on.

Evade:

1 line of players at each end of cones. Attacker with ball runs forward & tries to ‘evade’ defender who has come forward from other end. Defender must try to touch attacker. Attacker stays at the end he/she has run to, defender goes to opposite end to have a go at attacking.

5 Metre:

Full team in a line, staying together, runs forward 5 metres, call ‘touch’, team pretends to touch, gets back 5 together. Repeat. NOTE: Team must stay together in a line. This is the defence policy

Draw & pass:
(Try this with years 1 & 2 if they are OK with rest of drills)

2 lines behind each other between cones. Coach out front as defender. Each child in line on right has a ball. Ball carrier runs forward to defender, other player runs out too but slightly behind. Before defender touches ball carrier, b/c passes to other player. So person with the ball commits the defender before passing. Player runs full speed & scores. Next two & so on & so on

Calls:

(It is important the team knows the following positions & calls)

Dummy half - Person who picks up the ball & passes.

Runner - Person who receives the ball

Planter/ball player - Runner’ who has been touched & puts the ball on the ground.

Off side - Defense team must get back 5 meters from where the ball was played

Penalty - Team gets back 10 meters not 5.

FINISH WITH A BRIEF GAME (10 MINUTES)
