This Kaweka Challenge run starts at the Cameron Carpark and heads up to Kuripapango and along to Kiwi Saddle Hut. From Kiwi Saddle runners head to Castle Camp to Kaiarahi before dropping down the Cooks Horn track and along to the Lakes Carpark. Upon reaching Lakes Carpark runners head up Kuripapango and back to Cameron Carpark.
This course has 2220m of elevation from 492m to 1491m above sea level. This is a challenging course and runners will be required to carry compulsory safety equipment.
Small day backpack/running vest.
Rain jacket – it can be just a ‘shell’ but it must be seam-sealed waterproof.
Merino or thermal long sleeve top.
Extra fleece/mid weight wool top or synthetic puffer.
Long thermal tights or trousers (standard compression leggings are not acceptable).
Warm beanie.
Polyprop/thermal/warm gloves
.Survival bag (not a blanket).
Own snacks, gels, energy bars etc.
Water bottles/bladder – enough to carry 2 litres of water at all times
Headlight for night-time with back up batteries.
Cell phone
Gaiters (optional but recommended)GPS/compass (optional)
The above items must be in your pack or on your person AT ALL TIMES.
If runners are found to not be carrying the required gear they will be disqualified.
This trust aims to combat the threat, conserve the local kiwi population and, over time, establish a viable and expanding number of kiwi. To date, dedicated volunteers have raised and returned more than 310 chicks into the Kaweka Forest Park.
