Most Helpful on the Water - Sean Carrington & The Crew of the Maragaret J

This season, Sean Carrington and the crew of Margaret J have been recognised as Most Helpful on the Water. Their commitment to supporting fellow boaties has been outstanding, with timely rescues and towing assistance provided to several vessels throughout the year.

We are truly fortunate to have Sean, his crew, and the Margaret J as part of the Kāwhia Boating & Angling Club whānau -  a team who exemplify our club’s motto, Safety At Sea.

Junior Angler of the Year – Riley Bird

At just 14 years old, Riley Bird has already made an impressive mark in the fishing world. Fishing off his parents Brent and Paula’s boat Early Bird, Riley showed skill, patience, and determination throughout the season.

Recognised as Junior Angler of the Year, Riley’s highlights include:

  • 4 tag & release marlin

  • Two third-place finishes in the Junior Nationals

  • Strong and consistent results across a range of Club competitions

Riley’s achievements are a testament to his passion for fishing and the supportive team around him. He represents the future of our sport, and we are proud to celebrate his success.

Angler of the Year – Melanie Brown

Fishing from her trailer boat out of Aotea Harbour, Mel Brown has had a season to remember. Her dedication, skill, and passion for the sport have seen her achieve extraordinary results on the water.

Highlights of Mel’s season include:

  • 44 striped marlin tagged & released

  • 1 yellowfin tuna tagged & released

  • Landing a 57kg yellowfin tuna – now the Club’s Women’s All Tackle Record

  • Standout performances at the Kāwhia One Base Tournament

  • Chasing and landing Southern Bluefin Tuna off the rugged South Island coast

Mel’s achievements are nothing short of phenomenal and set a benchmark for excellence in New Zealand sport fishing. Her season reflects not only personal triumphs but also the spirit of commitment, perseverance, and passion that our Club celebrates.
