Aviation Studies

In recent years, Kuranui College has worked in close partnership with the Wellington Wairarapa Gliding Club (WWGC) to deliver an aviation and gliding programme for Kuranui students.

We are one of only three secondary schools in New Zealand to offer the National Certificate in Aviation and are the only secondary school that offers glider flight training as part of its practical aircraft operations component.

The flight training consists of glider ground handling, winch launch procedures, aero tow procedures and flying a glider solo.

The component is being taught and assessed by qualified instructors at the Gliding Wairarapa site at Papawai, Greytown.

In 2021, and for the first time, through generous financial donors and the WWGC, we have established two Gliding Scholarships.

These scholarships acknowledge commitment and skill on the airfield and in the aircraft and will support two Kuranui students on their journey "To Solo" and "To Soaring".
