The inaugural meeting was held in July 1949 with 14 men and 2 women present.
A nine hole course was marked out on a farm on the outskirts of town with a local rule at the time allowing players one clublength placement on the greens to avoid putting through cowpats.
The current course was originally an 80 acre holding paddock for the Maori Affairs Department who were developing the Pouakani Farm Block.
In between playing golf on the farm, members who worked on the farms and Ministry of Works were involved in building the current course which opened in 1951 with 22 men and 11 women members.
By May 1953 the membership had risen so quickly a waiting list had to be established.
The original clubhouse was a basic army hut brought in from Horahora.
The current clubhouse with panoramic views of Lake Maraetai was built in 1960.
