Learn to Skate classes are brought to you by the Mt Wellington Artistic Roller Skating Club & Skateland.

Where to Start

The best place to start are our Saturday public Learn to Skate classes, especially if you aren't ready to buy your own skates or want to check if roller skating is right for you.

  • Classes are held on Saturdays, starting at 10.15am and finishing at 11am.
You can arrive from 10am to allow enough time to get your skates on
  • Cost is $10 per class plus $4 for skate hire if required.
  • We cater for all ages and abilities - both quad and inline. No booking is required.

This class runs all year from February to December including during school holidays. In the odd event we cancel the class, we will let you know here and on our club Facebook page.

Upcoming class cancellations:

  • Saturday 11 May as our coaches are away competing
  • Saturday 25 May as we are holding a competition at our rink

We also run classes during the school term - see Term Classes below for information on these.

Levels

Our introductory level Early Bird Beginner is aimed at first time skaters or for anyone wishing to build their confidence on skates, this helps develop a sense of coordination and balance. At this level skaters will learn how to get up safely, stand and move on skates and begin to learn a few basic tricks. This level is held in our purpose built learners rink with extra rails and a carpeted area. They also spend some time on the main rink, focusing on gaining balance and stability on skates.

Our Intermediate group is where the skater continues on our main rink. This group consists of further development of fundamental skating skills taught in a positive, fun and social environment. These elements include moving across the rink, furthering developing balance and building off tricks taught at Early Bird level - great for building skating independence both in and outside the rink.

Our Pre-Advanced group is where the skater even further develops skills like balance, jumps, backwards and much more. This group prepares the skater for the advanced class building their confidence on new skills and tricks.

We also provide an Adult base group for older skaters taught by one of our adult skaters. This helps separate the significant age differences and also allows the adults to learn at a slower level if required. This group's content changes depending on the level of the skaters in the group and what the skaters are interested in learning.

At least one coach is allocated per group, helping skaters to move through the levels at their own pace. Our coaches will let the skaters know when they are ready to move up levels.

Term classes

During the school term, we also have two classes:

  • Mondays 4 - 5pm, all ages learn to skate
  • Mondays 6.30pm - 7.30pm, adults learn to skate and skating skills

We cover the same programme as the Saturday class but as the same group comes each week, skaters may find they progress faster. Classes may vary to cater for the levels of participants.

Note: skaters must have their own skates and must join the Mt Wellington RSC to attend these classes

What's next

Once a skater has been recommended by the coaches that they have gained the skills required, they could choose to attend our Advanced Class.  This is held earlier on a Saturday morning, for proficient skaters who wish to participate in various achievement/medal tests and/or competitive figure skating.

Club membership also allows the skater to attend other club training nights.
