Year 7-8 futureFERNS
A PDF copy of this information can be downloaded from the right of this page, or at the end on your mobile.
This age group play 7v7 netball. It is important to continue to enable players to play multiple positions so they do not specialise too soon. As in all futureFERNS age groups, there is a minimum half game policy so that all players have the opportunity to participate and develop.
At our Centre Year 7-8 netball is played on Saturdays in the main winter season. Games are outside at the Taita Courts, usually between 8.30am and 5pm.
Schools enter teams, and we usually have around 80-90 teams in our competition.
REGISTRATION & FEES
Team registrations are done through Sporty, please use your school sporty login information to enter your teams. If you need support please feel free to contact us.
There is no individual registration option, however if your school does not have a team then please get in touch as there may be another school who are a few players short.
There is a limit of 2 boys on court for this age group (up to 3 in a team), and they may not both play in the same goal circle.

COACH, UMPIRE, SCORER
The Year 7-8 futureFERNS coach workshop is held twice each year. Coaches attending will get access to an online resource that will set them up for the season with their team. This workshop is optional but highly recommended. Please click on the ANZfutureFerns Coach Workshop registration link.
Each team needs to provide their own umpire. Find out more about umpiring at our Centre HERE. Whistles are sold at our office.
Teams also need to provide a scorer, who will stand next to a scorer from the other team. More information about scoring a netball game is HERE
GAME DAY FORMAT
- Warm up (before the start time) see Year 7-8 NetballSmart warmup at right/end of page.
- Game of 7v7 Netball - see Year 7-8 Game Information brochure at right/end of page. Games are 4 x 10 minute quarters. Note - as in all futureFERNS formats, rolling subs are allowed.
- Cool down
EQUIPMENT AND PRACTICES
Most teams choose to have a practice at school.
School uniforms should be worn. Thermal tops (no leggings) in the schools registered colour may be worn underneath.
This age group use size 5 balls and a 3.05m goal post (full height). You need to bring balls, bibs and a small first aid kit with plasters.
GRADING OF TEAMS
Teams play three weeks of grading games (2 games per day of 2 x 10 min halves), and then be placed into a round one grade. Teams are re-graded again at the end of round one and placed into grades for round two. The aim is to have games as evenly contested as possible, so some teams may move multiple grades.
If you are interested in joining our Intermediate Grading Committee please contact admin@netballhuttvalley.co.nz. There are three meetings per season, plus some preparation time reviewing results.
POSTPONEMENTS & DEFAULTS
Intermediate netball is rarely postponed. Any postponements will be announced by 8am on our facebook page and then followed up with an email to team contacts. There is a rain day booked for each playing round to catch up on any games missed.
Please try to avoid a default. Defaults can incur a fee as it is really unfair on the opposition to miss out on a game. Please consider the impact of defaulting before you take this step. To avoid a default, we can register additional players for your team at no charge, or you can take the court with five players. The other team may be happy to loan you players and play the match as a 'friendly' so their kids don't miss out on a game. Please get in touch to talk through your options before defaulting. The cut off for on time defaults is noon on Friday, and they need to be made by speaking to an NHV staff member (not via email).
FURTHER OPTIONS FOR YEAR 7-8
McDonald's Queen's Birthday Tournament - a chance for all intermediate age players to experience a tournament. Held at our courts on Saturday 4 June and attended by teams from around the region.
NetballSmart Warm-ups - on the first week of games, several spare courts will be set up for teams to complete their warm-ups with support throughout the day. Learn about the NetballSmart warm up, ask questions, and check technique.
AIMS Games Preparation - support from Netball Central Zone's NetballSmart officer is available to help prepare teams for their AIMS games experience. Contact admin@netballhuttvalley.co.nz to book a time for your school's visit.
'Whistlers' Umpire Development - It is a good idea to encourage your students to register for the Whistler programme. This is held on Saturday mornings during the winter season from 8-9am and helps players to get started in umpiring. There is no charge to register, but Whistlers need to be reliable in their attendance. More information to follow.
