New Brighton Bowling Club was formed on Saturday July 18th 1914.

Founded during the Great War, in July 1914, by a group of New Brighton businessmen led by one Captain A W Owles, the club has outlived most of its contemporaries and is one of the oldest in Christchurch.  The club is now 111 years old and still going strong.

The site of the bowling club has been the same since 1914 – at 24 Hood Street with an entrance off 21 Mafeking Street. 

Two other foundation members of the club were Mr L W Hudson who who moved to Wellington and Mr J H Shaw who moved to Nelson.

One of the hardest working foundations members, Mr F Muirson, was at one time a member of the executive, match committee and selection panel as well as being greenkeeper. My Muirson was also the club's centre delegate and in 1932 the President of the Christchurch Bowling Centre.

Probably the best bowler produced by the New Brighton Club was 1946 Empire Games nominee Mr P Besley. In his day, My Besley was probably the best bowler in Christchurch Centre and he won numerous tournaments for the New Brighton Club.

Since the earthquakes of 2010/11, we have had the New Brighton RSA join us after their building was destroyed.  Recently, the Lions Club of New Brighton have come on board, meeting every first and third Wednesday preceded by dinner.

In the last few years big improvements have taken place in the club. Post earthquakes, the club has been refreshed, a new bar area, new indoor bowling surface and kitchen. It has become a hub for socail members and bowlers as well as the RSA who, with the permission of the previous committee, built a games room which houses two billiard tables and two dart boards.

It is our vision to promote the game of bowls and encourage all members to enhance their abilities in a caring, respectful and supportive environment.  To provide everyone in the community with quality lawn bowling learning experience that is fun, safe and friendly.
