North Canterbury Athletic Club

Performances
Notable club performances in earlier years have been; Joanne Best (NZ Heptathlon and 400m Hurdle Champion), Brent Pulley (NZ Cross Country Team), Reon Rollo (NZ Development Squad) and Dave Rowell the winner of many NZ Veteran track titles and World Championship placings. Shaun Farrell (Bronze Medalist at the World Junior Championships) started his running career with our club. Many members in the past and present have been selected to represent Canterbury, after winning Canterbury Championship Titles.

2008/09
Angela Smit represented NZ in 800m at the World Junior champs in Poland in 2008 plus the Pacific school games in Canberra, while Simon Gannaway and Ashleigh Hall were both selected to compete at the Pafiic School Games in 2008 with georgina Allison competing at the Commonwealth Youth champs.

Jaye Atkin is a reserve for the NZSS Cross-country team going to Slovakia.

2007/08
During 2007 Angela Smith competed at the Australian Youth Olympics and in early 2008 Ruth Croft was placed 54th at the World Cross-country champs in Edinburgh an placed highly at the World University Cross-country champs in France.

2006/07
Highlights were the Master women's and Masters Men's teams winning Takahe to Akaroa, Lucy Oliver winning five national titles including the SW’s short course champs and also the 1-2-3 of the Junior Mt Running champs by Lucy, Nicole Rogal and Ruth Croft. To top it off Nicole finished 8th at the world champs. Georgie Allison also won the heptathon at the Nationals.

2005/06
During 2006  Lucy Oliver was a NZ Representative at the world Cross-country champs in Fukuoka, Japan finishing 52nd.  Rebecca Moore was a competitor in the marathon at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

2004/05
During the 2004/05 year, members won in excess of 50 Canterbury, South Island or National titles, plus there were many placings.

Other recent highlights have been the selection of members into New Zealand representative teams:

Angela Smit competing at the Pacific Schools Games won the 800m Gold and created a new record of 2.10 while Ruth Croft also competed in the 3000m finishing 7th.

Late in 2005, Ruth was placed 7th in the world mountain running trophy for junior women.

2003/04
The 2003/04 year was another successful one for the club. This year saw the emergence of Julia Brown and Becky Holland as the top athletes of their age in the country for their events.

Julia not only collected the NZ secondary schools pole vault title, but also the Athletics NZ U18 title and also broke the record.

Becky continued her improvement and collected the NZ secondary schools junior cross-country and 3,000m track titles along with a number of provincial titles and records.

However it wasn't only these athletes who shone out, other great performances including SI titles came to Josh Jepson, Harley Jepson, Erin Whitla, Erin Heasley, Jess Hindson, Sophie Tapper and Ruth Croft. Towards the end of the summer, Ruth created a new Canterbury 1,500m steeplechase record and a SI secondary schools 3,000m record that had been set the previous year by Becky Holland.

Another highlight for the year was the 7th placing by the junior boys in the National Road relay and the 5th placing by the junior girls. Although the teams were Pegasus they included 4 boys and 5 girls from the 6 person teams.

The senior ranks were well represented again at national level by Rebecca Moore and Niki Earnshaw. Rebecca was placed 2nd in the national road race and later ran around 2.42 for the Chicago Marathon while Niki was the senior 100m hurdles title winner. Other prominent runners from previous seasons were badly affected by injury or illness.

2002/03
Becky Holland finished 2nd in the National Secondary schools cross-country champs during the Winter, while Josh Jepson finishd 5th, both in the year 9 grade.

Becky has since gone on to finish 1st in the junior girls 3,000m at the National Secondary Schools champs in December 2002.

The South Island Colgate Games held in Christchurch during January 2003 resulted in 9 gold medals (Becky Holland - G14 800m and 1,500m, Jenny Turnbull - G13 1,500m walk, Sophie Tapper - G12 400m, 800m and 1,500m and Harley Jepson B10 400, 800m and 1,500m). In addition to this there were 4 silver and 4 bronze medas. In the younger grades our athletes won 9 gold pennants, 9 silver pennants and 9 bronze pennants.

2001/02
Kelly Humphreys was again selected to compete in Ekiden Relays during the 2001/02 Summer Season and was appointed team captain for a team of younger athletes. She thoroughly enjoyed this experience.

The South Island Colgate Games in Dunedin during January 2001, resulted in 3 gold medals; Josh Jepson (B11 1,500m) and Sophie Tapper (G10 1,500m and 400m). Other individual and team medals were also won.

2000/01
Kelly Humphreys has competed in Ekiden Relays during the 2000/01 Summer Season and was also the NZ representative in a road mile in Hong Kong.  Natasha Buckley was another representative in the Ekiden Relays during this period.

Niki Earnshaw has recently been selected to compete for NZ at the Arafura Games in Darwin, this is an U23 competition.

Prior 2000
In 1997 the 13 year old girls 4 x 100 metres relay team (Becky Sweeny, Katie McCone, Jessica Riley and Sheryl Tomkies) took out the National Colgate title plus collected 9 other medals. These girls have continued with their success locally and nationally, especially at inter-secondary school level representing Rangiora High School. During the last season Rangiora High School have again won the National Secondary Schools Relay title to go with the Canterbury and South Island titles.
