2026-2029 Softball Rules - What Players Need to Know
Softball New Zealand has adopted the updated WBSC Fast Pitch Softball Rules for 2026-2029.
Onerahi Natives asks all players, coaches and managers to become familiar with these important changes and reminders before the new season.
1. New lead-off timing
This is the biggest on-field change.
A base runner may now leave their base once the pitcher’s stepping foot - also called the non-pivot foot - touches the ground during the pitching movement.
If a runner leaves before the stepping foot touches the ground:
Players should practise watching the pitcher’s stepping foot rather than waiting for the ball to leave the pitcher’s hand.
2. Home and visiting teams
The home team occupies the third-base dugout, fields first and bats in the bottom half of each inning.
The visiting team occupies the first-base dugout and bats first in the top half of each inning.
3. Fake plays and obstruction
The former “fake tag” rule has been widened to cover a “fake play.”
A fielder without possession of the ball must not use a fake tag, catch, throw, signal or gesture that slows down, obstructs or creates a danger for a runner.
The umpire may call obstruction, and serious conduct may result in the fielder being ejected.
4. Batting helmets
Batters and base runners must wear an approved helmet correctly.
A batter or runner who deliberately removes their helmet or deliberately wears it incorrectly during a live play may be called out.
There is no penalty when a helmet is accidentally dislodged.
5. Run-ahead rule
The official run-ahead rule is:
15 runs after three innings
10 runs after four innings
7 runs after five innings
WGSA competition time limits and any published local playing conditions will continue to apply.
6. Pitchers and foreign substances
A pitcher who licks or moistens the fingers of their pitching hand must dry them before touching the ball.
Foreign substances must not be placed on the ball.
7. Bats and grips
Tape placed on a bat grip must be applied in a continuous spiral, although it does not need to form a completely solid layer.
Any finger grip, flare cone, choke-up device or similar attachment must be properly secured to the grip with safety tape.
Illegal or altered bats will be removed from the game and may result in further penalties.
8. Line-ups and substitutions
A player cannot be named on the line-up card unless they are present, in uniform and in the dugout.
Substitutions can only be made while the ball is dead.
Coaches and managers must report substitutions to the Plate Umpire.
Players must ensure their uniform number matches the number recorded on the line-up card.
9. Dugout and bullpen conduct
Players and team personnel must remain inside the dugout or designated bullpen unless the rules allow them onto the field.
Where a bullpen is located inside the field of play, no more than four people are permitted:
One pitcher
One catcher
One spotter
One coach
Communication devices must not be used to communicate between players, coaches, the dugout, the playing field or the spectator area during a game.
Most important reminder
The lead-off timing has changed.
Runners may leave when the pitcher’s stepping foot touches the ground - not when the ball is released.
