A bit about certificates:

Parents and riders often ask for updates about exams and certificates and how this works so here goes ....

NZPCA sets out the requirements for exams and certificates and you can find more information on their website under Certificate Rules. This sets the framework within which our branch and Wellington Pony Club (WPC) work.

Pony Club is built on a competency based model which sets out a syllabus for riders at each level of the syllabus - this is one of the big determinants of the group that riders are put in, as the rallies are generally organised to progress riders through the syllabus. This way, riders can gain the signatures that prove their competency in each area and progress through to the next after completing the exam.

Exams can only be run when we have riders whose record cards show that they have achieved the required levels. This means at least three coaches' signatures against each element of the syllabus as described on the record cards, and the final signature must be from our Head Coach or her delegate - as this signature indicates that the rider is exam ready.

Multiple signatures cannot be obtained at the same rally and sign offs can ONLY be obtained rallies up to and including C+ level. This means that in order to be able to sit an exam, riders need to attend as many rallies as they possibly can and it is fair to say that it usually takes a season to progress from one certificate level to the next - this is about the time it takes to get the necessary work completed, particularly at the higher levels.

Because we are a big pony club, we run extra rallies for some certificates groups. It is also easier to cover off much of the horse management in an unmounted session.

This winter, to date, we have had rallies running for the D and D+ group, the C+ group and the B group, and we will soon be running some C rallies. Running these rallies depends on parent help to coordinate and organise the group. All riders riding in each of these groups are invited to attend these group based rallies - this is because in order to be classified as a rally, all eligible riders must be invited. Riders choose whether or not they attend these rallies.

The D, D+, and C exams can all be run and coordinated by us as a branch - there are some rules around this such as the examiner cannot have coached the rider within 4 weeks of the exam, and the C exam requires an external examiner. D and D+ exams we run generally as soon as we have three riders ready to go.

Exams above this level are run and coordinated by Wellington Pony Club. Riders preparing for these exams will be assessed by a WPC representative before they are invited to sit the exam.

As always, any questions or comments, please just ask a committee member.

Happy riding everyone!
