Technical Officials

Counties Regional Swimming Association aim:

  • One parent/guardian/relative for each swimmer under 12 is qualified as a Timekeeper
  • One parent for each swimmer over 12 is qualified as a IOT (Inspector of Turns) or Starter or Judge of Stroke or Referee.

These roles are necessary to run a swim meet and enable swimmers times to be recorded as official times.  If we do not have enough officials, the meet can proceed and the times 'won't count'.

When you are an official, you have an unobstructed view of the swimmers, food and drink provided and the friendly company of other officials.

Our Papakura Swimming Club has a Technical Representative.  If you have any questions regarding becoming an official please contact [email protected]

To become a Timekeeper, you attend a couple of meets as a timekeeper in training.  You become familiar with the Timekeepers section of the FINA Technical Officials handbook (only about 1 page).  When you are ready to get qualified you can contact Lesley and she will take you through the rules to confirm you are familiar with them.  Then at the next swim meet you can sit the practical component (writing down 12 of your times which are checked against the official time to make sure you know how to operate the stopwatch).
