About Kapa Haka at Pāpāmoa College
Pāpāmoa College has two kapa haka groups. Our Year 7 and 8 kapa haka group is the perfect introduction to the world of Māori performing arts. In this group, students will learn the fundamentals of kapa haka, including basic waiata, haka, and poi movements. It’s a supportive and welcoming environment where students can explore te ao Māori, build confidence, and most importantly—have fun while learning and performing together.
For students in Years 9 to 13, kapa haka becomes a more advanced and competitive experience. This group is for those who are passionate about refining their skills and representing the school at events and competitions. Members will deepen their understanding of tikanga (customs), language, and performance excellence through regular practices and high-level performance opportunities. It’s a chance to showcase talent, leadership, and pride in Māori culture.
