The format for year 5 & 6 miniball is decided on each year depending on skill level of the groups.
If the coaches feel that players have learnt the basic fundamentals of basketball, then they may introduce games.
Otherwise, the emphasis of these sessions is on learning and developing fundamental basketball skills and general concepts through activities and possibly modified games, where movement and fun are the focus.
Young players need to develop the ABC’s of athleticism:
- Agility
- Balance
- Coordination
AND speed to build a sound platform for learning and developing basketball skills.
QJBC hopes to see miniball height hoops (7ft 9in/2.4m) introduced in the future at The Queenstown Events Centre. In the mean time, full size hoops (10ft/3.05m) are the only hoops available. This is another reason why games aren't always played in these sessions. Players in this age group need to learn proper shooting techniques before attempting to shoot in games, otherwise they will learn bad habits.
