Year 11, 12 and 13 academic wrap-up: Look ahead to derived grade exams in term three

As we head into the winter break, we want to acknowledge the fantastic effort and dedication our seniors have poured into term two. Our learners are tracking beautifully toward their goals, which is a testament to the powerful partnership between school and home. Thank you to our incredible teaching team and our wonderful parent community for lifting our learners up every step of the way.

As we head into a well-deserved winter break, here is a streamlined look at what our seniors are aiming for and a crucial heads-up for the term ahead.

Academic targets at a glance

Whether aiming for course completion or higher accolades, keep these NCEA benchmarks in focus:

  • Course achievement: Secure at least 14 credits in a single subject to earn an Achieved grade.
  • Certificate Endorsement: Aim high! Amassing 50+ credits at Merit or Excellence levels earns an endorsement.
  • University Entrance (Year 13): Requires at least 14 credits across three distinct UE-approved subjects, alongside core literacy and numeracy.

Strategic focus by year level

Our senior school visions ensure every learner is supported through their specific educational milestone:

  • Year 11 (Strive for Success): Shifting foundational habits into NCEA realities, locking in co-requisites, and targeting Level 1.
  • Year 12 (Academic and Vocational Excellence): Growing independence and deepening individual strengths within specialised fields.
  • Year 13 (Career Ready): Refining independent study skills for a seamless transition beyond school gates.

Important: Derived grade exams in term three

Term three is traditionally our most academically intensive block of the year. The primary focus for all senior learners will be the derived grade exams, which act as a vital safety net and preparation tool for end-of-year external exams. Please note that the derived grade exams and the NZQA exams will be held at Te Kura Tuarua (senior campus).

  • Who: Years 11, 12, and 13
  • When: Starting Friday in week 8 (11 September) through to the end of week 9 (Friday 18 September)
  • Where: Te Kura Tuarua (senior campus)

Comprehensive details – including exact exam timetables and specific transport arrangements for learners who take the school bus – will be published and sent home in term three.

Getting ahead: Holiday prep for term three

While the holidays are a well-deserved time to rest, they are also the perfect opportunity to set yourself up for exam success before the term rush begins. Take a bit of time over the break to:

  • Clear your space: Tidy your bedroom and set up a dedicated, quiet study area free from distractions.
  • Get organised: Map out a realistic study timetable for the upcoming weeks.
  • Check your schedule: Look ahead at your term three commitments: sports, work, and family. Have you got the balance right?!

A little preparation now will make a massive difference when exams arrive. Enjoy the break!

Know your value. Bring your effort. Succeed together.
