Principal's pānui – 3 July 2026

As we arrive at the end of another busy and rewarding term, I want to take a moment to thank every member of our Horoeka Haemata community for the way you have contributed to making this term such a positive one. There has been much to celebrate, much to learn, and countless examples of our learners and staff living our E Tū Tāngata mindset each day.

Matariki reminds us to pause, reflect on the journey behind us, celebrate the people who strengthen our communities, and look ahead with hope and purpose. It is a time to acknowledge those who have gone before us, to give thanks for what we have, and to set our aspirations for the future. Those themes resonate strongly with who we are as a school and the way we continue to grow together as one school across two campuses.

A whakataukī that feels particularly fitting at this time of year is:

"Mā te huruhuru ka rere te manu."
Adorn the bird with feathers so it can fly.

At Horoeka Haemata, we are privileged to work alongside our whānau to provide those "feathers" – the knowledge, confidence, values and opportunities that allow our young people to spread their wings and flourish.

One of the highlights of the week was the opportunity to acknowledge Brita Theewis for her outstanding contribution to the growth of Te Ao Māori across our college. Through her leadership as a kaiako and Ako Leader, she has helped deepen our understanding of te reo me ōna tikanga Māori. Presenting Brita with a kākahu was a small way of expressing our gratitude for the generosity, passion and commitment she has shown our community. It was a special moment, particularly during the Matariki season, to recognise someone who has helped strengthen the cultural foundations of our kura. Brita's influence will continue to be felt for many years to come, and we thank her sincerely for all she has given.

This week has also showcased the incredible talent, creativity and enthusiasm of our learners through our Big Performance and Big Surprise competitions. Whether performing on stage, organising behind the scenes, or enthusiastically supporting one another, our learners once again demonstrated the confidence, courage and sense of fun that makes Rolleston College such a special place. These events are wonderful reminders that learning extends well beyond the classroom. They build connection, encourage creativity and celebrate the unique strengths every learner brings to our community.

As the holidays begin, I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to rest, reconnect with whānau and friends, and enjoy some well-earned downtime. Winter provides a chance to slow the pace a little, recharge, and prepare for another exciting term ahead.

Thank you to our staff for the care, expertise and commitment you continue to show our learners every day. Thank you also to our parents, caregivers and whānau for your continued partnership. Together we are building far more than a school – we are nurturing a community where every young person knows they have value, understands that we succeed together, and recognises that others matter.

As we look towards the new term, may the spirit of Matariki continue to guide us: reflecting on where we have come from, celebrating where we are today, and looking ahead with optimism to what is still to come.

From everyone at Horoeka Haemata Rolleston College, I wish you a safe, happy and restful holiday break. Thank you for another wonderful term. We look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for term three.

Mānawatia a Matariki!
