Other people matter

One of the privileges of being Principal is seeing the countless small moments that make Horoeka Haemata such a special place. While our community often celebrates the big achievements – on the sports field, on the stage or in the classroom – it is often the quieter moments that leave the greatest impression.

This term the key theme underpinned by our E Tū Tāngata mindset is: Other people matter.

It is easy to be kind when life is going well. The real test of character comes when we are busy, frustrated or under pressure. Choosing to encourage someone, including a person who is standing on their own, thanking a teacher, supporting a teammate, or simply checking in on a friend are all actions that build the kind of community we want to be.

As the whakataukī reminds us:

"Nāu te rourou, nāku te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi."
With your food basket and my food basket, the people will thrive.

Every one of us has something to contribute. Every act of kindness strengthens our school. Together we create a place where everyone feels they belong.

Building for the future

It has also been exciting to see continued progress on our senior campus development this week. Each new stage of construction is another step towards creating learning environments that match the aspirations we have for our young people. This week, Mr Wilson and I had the privilege of visiting the new building and even standing on the recently poured second storey.

While there is still plenty of work ahead, it is encouraging to see the vision gradually becoming reality. These new facilities are about much more than buildings – they are about creating spaces where learners can discover their passions, build strong relationships and prepare for the futures they choose.

Thank you to everyone involved in this project. Developments of this scale require the collaboration of many people, and we appreciate the ongoing commitment of our Ministry partners, contractors and everyone working behind the scenes to keep the project moving forward.

Celebrating a decade of service

This week we also celebrate a significant milestone as Ms Sophie Ralph reaches ten years of service at Rolleston College.

Sophie joined the college in our very early years and has played an integral role in helping shape the school we are today. From opening a brand-new school, to leading teams, mentoring staff, supporting countless young people and now helping lead our junior campus as Associate Principal, she has consistently demonstrated outstanding commitment to our vision and values.

More importantly, Sophie leads with genuine care for people. She builds strong relationships, believes in the potential of every learner and colleague, and continually puts others before herself. Her contribution has helped establish the positive culture that makes Horoeka Haemata such a special place to learn and work.

As we head into another week, I encourage each of us to look for one opportunity every day to make a positive difference for someone else. Often it is the smallest actions that have the biggest impact.

Together, let's continue to live our Rolleston Spirit, embrace our E Tū Tāngata mindset and remember that other people really do matter.
