Rolleston College derived grade examinations will take place from Friday 11 September (week 8) to Friday 18 September (week 9).

All year 11, 12 and 13 exams will take place at Te Kura Tuarua – our senior campus. Next week we will share the derived grade exam timetable and further key information.

As we move closer to our senior school derived grade exams, now is the time for learners to lean into their goals and give it their all. At school, we believe in effort – not just because it's expected, but because it works. Trying hard isn’t something to be embarrassed about, it’s something to be proud of. Whether it's in the classroom or in life, effort is what fuels growth.

We appreciate it when professionals try their best – from mechanics to surgeons to baristas – so let’s make sure we’re showing the same commitment to our learning. Derived grade exams are a key checkpoint, not just for this term, but as preparation for NCEA externals.

To support both learners and parents, we’re highlighting four key areas where "trying hard" really pays off:

PREPARATION: Start strong by creating (and sticking to) a clear, balanced study plan. Parents can help by checking in on these schedules and offering encouragement. Make sure notes are organised, and take the time to complete past papers and attend tutorials – these are valuable opportunities to build confidence and understanding.

PARTICIPATION: Show up early, prepared and with a positive mindset. Try every question – even the tricky ones. Attempting something is always better than leaving it blank, and you might surprise yourself!

PROGRESS: The real power of these exams lies in what comes after. Teachers will give targeted feedback – use it. Reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and apply those lessons as you prepare for your final exams later in the year.

PERSONAL BEST: These assessments are stepping stones toward your future. Whether you’re aiming for university, a trade, or full-time work, trying hard now helps open doors later.
