Across the Canterbury region, people of all ages receive countless benefits from sport and physical activity. They rely, however, on having the right spaces and places to keep active in their own communities.
The value of community sport and recreation has inspired Sport Canterbury and the Greater Christchurch Partnership to create the first ever Canterbury Spaces and Places Plan: A Regional Approach to Sporting Facilities.
The Canterbury Spaces and Places Plan focuses on an area defined by the territorial boundaries of Ashburton District Council, Selwyn District Council, Christchurch City Council, Waimakariri District Council and Hurunui District Council.
The Plan identifies key issues or projects that are priorities for the region. It also reinforces that a number of facility developments already confirmed/built will be fundamental to the developing network.
It is a genuine reflection of the region’s stakeholders – their vision and priorities. Many of the stakeholders embraced the opportunity to take part in the planning as a way of revisiting their own priorities.
In addition to sports, Councils and funders are also encouraged to use the plan in their own decision-making and prioritising.
In late 2016, Sport Canterbury began the process of leading the development of a comprehensive Sports Facility Plan for the South Canterbury Region.
The South Canterbury Spaces and Places Plan is now complete; this marks the first time a truly Regional Sports Facilities Plan has been written for the South Canterbury region. This plan will form part of a wider Canterbury and West Coast approach to sports facility provision.
Sport Canterbury brought the Timaru, Waimate and Mackenzie District Councils together along with the Community Trust of Mid & South Canterbury, Trust Aoraki and a Community Representative, to form a Steering Group for the project.
Sport Canterbury wishes to thank our project partners as well as Sport New Zealand for their support of the plan, and Global Leisure Group as our project consultants.

The value of community sport and recreation inspired Sport Canterbury and the Greater Christchurch Partnership to create the first ever Canterbury Spaces and Places Plan: A Regional Approach to Sporting Facilities. This plan followed the Canterbury earthquakes, following the impact on the region's sport and recreation infrastructure. In the years to follow, in partnership with District and Regional Councils, Sport Canterbury has led the development of Spaces and Places Plans for both the South Canterbury and West Coast regions.
West Coast Spaces and Places
Thank you to our communities and stakeholder across the West Coast region, whose support with this project has been invaluable. Following 18 months of information gathering and consulation, we are pleased to provide this draft plan for stakeholder and community feedback.
