Green Prescription (Rongoā Kākāriki) provides free physical activity and lifestyle support for adults in Taranaki who want to improve their health and wellbeing. You can refer yourself, or your doctor, nurse or other health professional can refer you.

Green Prescription provides support and motivation to improve individual wellbeing/hauora through physical activity and lifestyle support.​​​​​​​


Is it free?

Yes this is a free service.

Who can use Green Prescription?

Any medically stable adults motivated to increase their physical activity and make lifestyle changes.

We are particularly keen to support anyone with  newly diagnosed or long-term health conditions who would benefit from increasing their physical activity levels.

This includes people with diabetes, cardiovascular or respiratory conditions, osteoarthritis and / or depression/anxiety.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

No you do not. You can complete a Green Prescription self-referral form (see Refer Yourself button above)  or ask your doctor, practice nurse or health care professional.

What happens after I sign up?

First Consultation

Your advisor will contact you to arrange a phone conversation or in-person discussion to  start the support process. They will discuss your circumstances and needs and work with you to make an achievable action plan that you are confident with. Online support is also available.


Ongoing Support and Review

Your advisor will stay in regular contact by phone, email or text to help your motivated and check in on progress. They will discuss the benefits you may have noticed, your activity levels and possible next steps. The length of your support depends on your circumstances and renewals of prescriptions can be discussed.  Additional cultural support for Māori is available. Please discuss this with your advisor.​​​​​​​

Green Prescription support in the Community

The Green Prescription team work with community activity providers to address some of the known barriers for people when trying new types of physical activity and establishing new habits.  We are very grateful to these providers who support the programme. ​​​​​​​ ​​​​​​​
