Taranaki Badminton Academy

What is Academy?

Academy is the name we give to our group of junior players who have been selected to represent Taranaki in regional and national badminton events.  The players involved in Academy train once a week (sometimes more often) in addition to their club night training.  The age groups that are included in Academy are:

  • Under 13
  • Under 15
  • Under 17
  • Under 19

At a minimum, Taranaki aims to take teams to the following events every year:

  • Central region team tournaments.  There are two tournaments for each age group, day trips to Palmerston North and are usually held on a Sunday
  • National Teams tournament.  This is a four day tournament held in the July school holidays in Palmerston North

Players are also encouraged to enter other age group events that are held throughout New Zealand during the season.  To find out about more events available, check out the Badminton NZ website for more details.

How do I get selected for Academy?

At the start of the season (Feb/Mar) trials will be held for Academy.  We would like players to register their interest (click link here), so that we have an idea of how many players may come to the trials and that we can ensure we have everyone included with our communications.

What is the cost for Academy?

Estimate cost is $200 for the season but this does not include the costs of attending the tournaments.  Cost would be confirmed once team numbers are known.

What other additional coaching opportunities are there if I am not selected for Academy?

All players are encouraged to attend their club nights for coaching.

In 2022 there will be a under 15 development group that will run on Friday nights.  For more information regarding this coaching group, please email [email protected]

In addition, there may be opportunities for private coaching (at own cost).  For information about private coaching please email [email protected]
