Flag football

Flag football is the fastest growing format of the game, not just here in New Zealand, but across the world. It is a high-octane, non-contact version of American football, where tackles are made by pulling off flags which all players wear on their hips. The growth of the game is evidenced by professional leagues starting to appear in the USA and it has become popular enough to make a push to become an exhibition sport at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. New Zealand is competitive in the international arena, with the NZ Mako competing at the 2016 World Champs in Miami and finishing a creditable 9th place. They also qualified for the 2020 World Champs in Denmark, which were cancelled due to covid. NZAFF, the governing body for the game is New Zealand, have committed to sending both a mens and womens team to the next World Champs in Finland in 2024, so international pathways are available to players in this sport.

Tauranga City Tridents want a piece of this action! After having an extremely successful NZAFF Flag Football Club National Championships, we running it back again. The main focus here is 2023 version of the event being held in Auckland on the last weekend of March. We will be looking to take teams to compete in the youth mens, open mens, open womens and masters mens divisions.

Throughout the season we run regular training sessions with a view to competing in both our internal club competition, the Moana Bowl, training and game days with other clubs, and external tournaments like the Hamiton Invitational and the afformentioned Flag Football National Champs.
