W1s & W2

We have five W1s and one W2 that can be used by members. Two of the W1s have a rudder and the other three are rudderless.

Guidelines for carrying the Club W1 and W2 outriggers once permission has been given from Tunui A Te Ika executive.
If you are transporting the club waka, then you must have a proper roof rack, cradle and tie down system.  If you do not have this, the waka are not to be transported – no debate.

Remember the W2 is longer and heavier so it is best if you have a long-based vehicle such as a station wagon, a 4WD or a truck. Tie down both the front and the back.  If you want help, or are not sure, then ask someone who has carried waka on their vehicle.

You are legally required to secure a white article (a rag will do) to the back of the waka.  This is to ensure cars traveling behind you can see that you are carrying something on the top of your car that is over length.

Take extra care when you are driving.  Be aware of following and stopping distances. Watch out for Vans, Trucks and 4WD’s that are higher up off the ground.

If you park your car with the waka on top then make sure it is not on a diagonal park so that the waka is sticking out too much.  Use your common sense.
