Physical activities

We have a 70 x 30m playing field, marked out for Rugby and Soccer.

We also have:

  • cricket nets
  • tennis courts
  • a netball court
  • long jump pit
  • maypole
  • 14m solar heated swimming pool.

There is an amazing adventure area with an enclosed slide and flying fox.

Sandpit, gardens, shade area and huge trees offer other play areas.

Swimming
During the first term of the year we have our swimming sports. This is a fun day for the whole school and community.

All children participate in the Country Swimming Sports Day held in nearby
Ōpōtiki. Rural schools from the district come together to compete.

The District Swimming Sports are also held in Opotiki during Term 1. Children from years 5 to 8 are selected to represent our school.

In 2009 we secured just over $18,000 funding from the Eastern Bay Energy Trust to install solar heating for the pool. The Fundraising Group supported us with another $2,000. This has lengthened our swimming season considerably. Thank you EBET and everyone who helped raise money for the school.

Netball
Netball is a popular sport at Waiotahe with both girls and boys participating. Games are played at the Memorial Park netball pavillion in
Ōpōtiki.

Practices are held at school during lunchtime. Parents are asked to help with coaching, managing the teams and transporting children to the games.

Uniforms are provided by the school - there is an end of season break-up each year.

Cross Country
Our school Cross Country is held during Term 2. Students are then selected to compete in the District Cross Country Day held at nearby Woodlands School.

The Rau Shield
The Rau Shield is an annual sporting event held for rural schools at Waimana School. Children compete in Rugby and Netball.

In 2010 and again in 2012 our Yr 1,2 & 3 Rippa Rugby team won the Black Brothers Cup, and our Senior netball girls won the Jeffries Shield for the 5th time in 6 years for 2012.

The children of Waiotahe look forward to the sports days held at the Memorial Sportsground during the year.

Again all students take part and partcipate to the best of their ability.

Go 4 it sports programme
The year 1 to 6 students are provided with the sports programme delivered by the various sporting codes in the Bay. The programme involves, team work as well as individual skill development for students.

Outdoor education program
A programme of outdoor visits to areas in the community utilising the sea and bush is a part of the life for students at Waiotahe.

The children enjoy overnight stays; at school for the little ones; and longer two to four night away stays at local tenting spots. the older senior children venture to the Kaimai's and to the National Park for further exciting challenges.
