Development Opportunities

At WHS a range of development opportunities are available for students to engage in to reach for their heights in their chosen sports.

Athlete Development Programme

The WHS Athlete Development Programme (ADP) is an opportunity for students to gain further knowledge and support to improve fundamental movement skills and personal athletic performance.

The ADP is strength and conditioning training based on long term athletic development models and aims to ensure all students are capable and proficient to operate in a performance training environment.

The ADP is open to all students who seek to improve their personal performance and outcomes in sport and physical activity. It is run each term for eight weeks, on site at WHS, twice a week. Expressions of interest are advertised in the school newsletter at the end of each term and student sign ups determine structure and costs for each block.

WHS Winter Sports Academy

For over a decade the WHS Winter Sports Academy has been an important programme enabling aspiring young athletes to pursue sporting and academic excellence.

Participants in the Academy’s winter programme train in their chosen alpine, free skiing or snowboarding disciplines with expert coaching on one of the local mountains Coronet Peak, The Remarkables or Cardrona.

The athletes train on snow up to four mornings a week and do their school work in the afternoon on up to three of these days so that academic learning, progress and achievement is maintained.

This programme has been developed in partnership with the Queenstown Alpine Ski Team (QAST) to allow students to reach their maximum athletic potential while pursuing their academic goals.

This high performance academy allows for a flexible academic schedule for best on-snow training. For more information about QAST or to register your interest visit www.qast.org.nz.
