Hockey

WELCOME TO THE WELLINGTON COLLEGE HOCKEY CLUB

Wellington College has a strong hockey tradition with the first teams being formed in 1936.  Since then, Wellington College teams have enjoyed considerable success in the local competitions, with teams often making the top four in their competition grade. We usually have 5 or 6 teams competing in the various grades, and all are well supported with excellent coaching and managers.

The 1st XI play in the Premier 1 grade and attend Rankin Cup/India Shield; the 2nd XI play in the Premier 2 grade and attend the Galletly Cup tournament for 2nd XIs.  We also select an U15 fixture team to contest the local Miskimmin Cup, the traditional against Palmerston North Boys' High School and New Plymouth Boys High School, as development opportunities.

Many senior players achieve their school Honours through hockey. We also achieve significant representation at the Wellington rep hockey level, and some players go on to achieve high levels of hockey beyond College sport.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Uniform: 

  • 1st XI - all uniform is supplied. 

  • 2nd XI - two team sets of numbered shirts (one black, one yellow) are supplied as this team attend a Hockey NZ tournament (which mandates numbered shirts). 

  • All other teams need to buy the WC Hockey shirts from the uniform shop - these are not required to be numbered as Wellington Hockey only require Premier 1 teams to wear numbered shirts. 

  • All teams from the 2nd XI down also need to buy black PE shorts, and black socks with gold bands.  

Equipment: Stick, mouthguard and shin guards required. PCD gear supplied. GK gear supplied if needed.

Venues: National Hockey Stadium, Fraser Park, Elsdon, Maidstone, and Kapiti. 

Training: Once or twice a week at the school turf, or at NHS depending on team

Competition: Weekday evenings dependent on grade

Season: Terms 2 and 3

Cost: $175 registration fee - additional coaching fees apply for the 1st XI
