Hockey Information for boys new to WC

Introduction:

For the last few years we have fielded 5-6 teams in the WHA secondary boys’ competition, which makes us the biggest boys’ hockey school in Wellington.

Wellington College is a strong hockey school. It is therefore important that boys coming into WC hockey in Year 9 set their expectations appropriately. It is extremely rare for even the most "talented" in-coming year 9 boy to be placed any higher than the 3rd XI, and it is not uncommon for boys who have played U13 rep teams to be placed in the 4th or 5th XIs.

What playing hockey for College can offer:

    • Strong coaching from experienced hockey coaches and/or or top players
    • Robust, performance and skills based selection criteria
    • The opportunity to play in home and away traditional fixtures (1st XI & U15s)
    • The chance to attend a tournament during Winter Tournament Week (1st & 2nd XIs)
    • A special 10% discount off all equipment purchased from Just Hockey (show them your student ID card)

Frequently asked questions about WC Hockey:

    Q. Where can I buy the uniform and what does it cost?

    A. Click here for all the info!

    Q. Do I need to buy both the black and the yellow strip?

    A. No, just buy the black strip; the yellow is the alternate strip provided for the 1st & 2nd XIs.

    Q. When are games played?

    A. All College hockey is played midweek. More info here.  Note: game start times range anywhere from 4pm to 8pm.

    Q. Where are games played?

    A. Anywhere from Newtown to Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua, and Kapiti.  More information here.

    Q. How does my son get to games?

    A. There is no school van - parents are responsible for getting their sons to games, and the manager will circulate a team list to help with organising car pools.

    Q. What sorts of things are tested at trials?

    A. We test skills and then conduct game trials.

    Q. Do Y9s-Y13s trial together?

    A. Skill testing is done by year groupings. We then sort the players roughly by ability following the skill testing, so you may trial with others outside your age/year group.

    Q. Who selects the teams?

    A. We have parents help with the skill testing, but they have no say in team selections. As far as possible the selection panel is made up of completely independent selectors (meaning they don't have a son).

    Q. Do I have to trial?

    A. No-one has to trial. You just tell us on the registration form that you don't want to trial, and you will then get placed in a lower team.

    Q. I am a GK. Does WC provide GK gear or do I have to supply my own?

    A. Yes, we have GK gear, and we will make sure we get enough to fit you if we don't have any in your size.

    Q. I have a lot of other questions - where can I get answers?

    A. Check out our FAQs page to see if your question is answered there. Otherwise, drop us a line.
