McEvedy Shield 100th year - 2023
This year’s McEvedy was such a special occasion. Not only was is the 100th year of the competition taking place but also the first time crowds were back since 2020 due to COVID. It was an exciting and hard fought competition. There were so many wonderful performances by Wellington College Athletes with too many to name but here are some highlights for each grade:
Under 14
The top points scorer in the Under 14 grade was Tom Hughson who won the 100, 200 and 400m races. He was also a member of the 4x100m relay team along with Libero Taupa’ū, Yusuf Quazi and Harley Logovae that broke the McEvedy record. This was also a Wellington College record.
Under 15
The Under 15 grade almost saw a record get broken, with Logan Hopfler equalling the 800m record. Unfortunately, the Silverstream athlete ran slightly faster than him and so it will be his name that goes in the history books. However, remember that this is 100-year-old competition so if you are equalling records you are running very fast! Well done Logan.
Under 16
Joe Martin ran an amazing 800m race in the Under 16 800m and broke the record with in a time of 1:58.45. He also won the 1500m Regan Kwan jumped an amazing 13meters in the triple jump to break the Wellington College Under 16 record.
Open
In the Senior grade Ben Brunner convincingly took out the 800 and 1500m titles which is impressive considering he’s Year 12 and will be back to hopefully do it again next year. The day was capped off nicely with the Senior 4x100m team winning their relay by nearly a second. A fitting reward for some hard training.
It was a great day and the coaches are so proud of the team for handling the pressure that comes along with trying to win 8 in a row.
