OUR STORY

We are Wellington City Pirates Baseball - a well-organised, community-run baseball club with a vision to get kids having fun playing baseball with their friends.

OUR JOURNEY SO FAR

Baseball is one of the fastest-growing sports in New Zealand, and it’s a sport that doesn’t discriminate. Kids from all backgrounds, ability and potential can have fun playing the game. What’s more, it offers fantastic future opportunities for players in terms of offshore education opportunities and even a professional career path. We believe it’s only a matter of time before New Zealand produces our own Major League Baseball equivalent to Stephen Adams. We’d dearly love to be part of that player's journey!

Our club was originally established in 2018 as PK Pirates Baseball, based in Wellington's eastern suburbs. We started small, with 28 players in the 2018/19 season and 25 in 2019/20. This allowed the Club to enter a 13U and 16U team in the Wellington Baseball Association weekend competition. But, while the sport of baseball was growing in New Zealand, our club wasn’t. We knew we needed to do something different to attract more players and get baseball thriving in Wellington City.

REVITALISING OUR CLUB

In July 2020, a small group of committed Wellingtonians devised a plan to revitalise the Club and grow the game in Wellington City. This plan laid the foundations for our future.

Under the leadership of Clayton Willocks (who represented NZ in the NZ Black Sox world championship-winning softball teams in 2000 and 2004), we established a passionate committee with a goal to give more Wellington kids the opportunity to play baseball.

That season we introduced a mid-week Development League, achieved significant player growth and re-energised our Club. In the three months since setting our goal, we grew into Wellington’s largest baseball club. And we’re still growing!

THE ROAD AHEAD

Looking ahead we're still committed to our vision to get more kids having fun playing baseball. We'll continue to invest in our young players, welcome new members, and seek the support of volunteers and sponsors.

We'd love to have you join us on that journey.

Go Pirates Nation!
