Many women come to Canterbury University, Lincoln University and Ara from other regions in New Zealand or from overseas. Some of them want to play either competitive or social womens cricket. Unfortunately there are no womens cricket teams at Ara (Polytechnic) , Canterbury University or LIncoln University. All womens cricket is through the clubs and there is a perfect central city club for you ...
St Albans Cricket Club offers women keen to play cricket, 3 options:
1. Play competitive cricket against the best women cricketers in Canterbury including NZ Players and Canterbury Magicians. This is "Premier Womens Cricket" and starts at 1030am on a saturday morning playing One Day Cricket (50 over). Our team has NZ players and a mixture of Canterbury Magicians (our regional womens team) plus some u19 players and younger rep players. We are always on the look out for good batters especially. Every year we welcome and accept between 1-3 overseas players and last season we have varsity students from Wairarapa, Auckland and Nelson play in our Premier Womens team.
2. Premier Reserve - this is a grade for competitive cricketers played on saturday afternoons on grass. Games are 30 or 40 overs and are 9 aside. The women are mainly at high school or university or in their 20s. This is a good competitive grade. Our Premier and Premier Reserve sides train together.
3. "Womens Social Grade " This is a T20 grade starting at 2pm and finishes by 5pm (ish). The women are generally all over 20 years of age. They usually come back to the clubrooms after the game and have a few alcoholic beverages and are the life of the party. This is a truly social grade - the girls are good cricketers but want to play for fun. Perfect grade if you are a mum and have younger children to look after, or trying to juggle work and sport.
St Albans is the only club in Christchurch offering a team in each grade - so you can play at the level appropriate for you or with women of the right age socially. No other club offers these three options!
So come and join Saints - we are centrally located at Hagley Park where we train and play.
