What is a Ribbon Day?
There are ranges of ribbon days held around the Waikato/Bay Of Plenty region. What is means is that other athletes from the region meet at the club for a range of races, throws and jumps. You pay for a programme ($2) but aside from that there is no charge. Here is a general description of what to expect at a ribbon day. Click here
Ribbon Days have a programme for all aged athletes from Tiny Tots upwards. Only heats are run, there are no finals, and everyone ends up with at least one ribbon. If you are serious about athletics ribbon days are a great way to try out different distances, compete against a wide range of athletes, and practice relays.
If you are not so serious it is also a lot of fun. They are a great way for Field athletes to see their progress in a measured event and to compete against a wider variety of athletes.Athletes from 5 years upwards have to wear a club singlet to compete at a ribbon day.
This involves sewing on the "age flash". Athletes from 7 years upwards also need to have black plain shorts. You need to be a registered athlete to compete at ribbon days. 3 and 4 year olds do not need to wear a club singlet.
Ribbon Days
Ribbon Days are held throughout the season and hosted by different clubs around the Waikato / Bay of Plenty.
For those families who are new to athletics, we strongly encourage you to attend Ribbon Days when you can. Ribbon Days are participation based and a huge amount of fun for kids up to 14 years of age. You do not need to register - just turn up and compete in what you want. There’s lots of ribbons up for grabs and events are typically structured so every child earns at least one ribbon (although it can’t be guaranteed).
They are a great experience for the kids, learning the rhythm and feel of a competition day. It’s great practice for the more structured competitions like the WBOP Children’s Champs and the Colgate Games.
Ribbon days are also FREE so please come along and join in the fun! They are a great way to meet new friends, build on skills and technique, and compete against other athletes.
A morning programme runs for Mini Club, and a full-day programme runs for athletes 7-14 yrs.
