Howick Junior Athletics Club

Howick Athletics Club are looking forward to hosting the Howick Pakuranga Open Day in February 2014.  All the relevant programmes are at the bottom of the page and an explanation of events is detailed below.

Please note 13 and 14 year olds are allowed to attend Athletics Auckland Senior Track and Field Meets as well as the Pakuranga Athletics Club Senior Track and Field Club Night every Tuesday starting on the October 2012.

Open Days

There are numerous amounts of Open Days spread throught the Counties Manukau and Auckland region during the season. Open days provide competition which is the next step up after club nights. They are family orientated days and most families take a picnic and enjoy summer. They usually last about 4 hours and you can do 1 or all the events for your age groups. Open Days are free to attend and a printed programme usually costs between 50 cents and $1.00.

Championship Events

This is the next step above Open Days and provides strong competition througout the age groups. The team championship events where Howick will select teams for this season will be the Counties Manukau Relays, the Auckland Relay Championships and the Auckland Top 10 Championship. (Top 10 is a competition were the 26 Junior Clubs in Auckland select 2 boys and 2 girls from each age group and is a points competition. The Club with the most points are crowned the Top Club in Auckland and teams in the top 10 recieve banners).

The next lot of Championship events are individual events. These include the Auckland 1500m Championships which is held in conjunction with the prestigious John Walker Night of Miles, the Auckland Pentathlon where athletes 7-9 have to do three events and athletes 10-14 do five events. The Counties Manukau Championships which are to be held in March is the competition where Howick athletes perform their best. Athletes can choose how many events they do (max 4 events) and compete to win medals.  The Auckland Championships will be held in March as well and athletes are encourage to enter. 7-11 year olds will have to attend a qualifying day the week before with the top 8 qualifers on the track and top 10 on the field events progressing through to the Auckland Championships. Athletes 12-14 do not need to qualify.

National/International Events

These events are the pinnacle of Junior Athletics in New Zealand.These include the North Island Colgate Games to be held in Inglewood and the South Island Colgate Games to be Held in Invercargill. These Championships are held the week after each other in January. Please Refer to the Colgate Games Tab at the top of the page for more information.

The 12/13 and 14-17 Interprovincials are held each year and puts provinces against each other to see who will come ut on top and is decided by a points based system. Please refer to the Interprovincials Tab at the top of the page for more information.

The 10 and 11 year old Trans Tasman tests Aucklands Top athletes againist athletes from New South Wales. Held In January each year and in 2014 will be held in TBA. Please refer to the Trans Tasman Challenge Tab at the top of the page for more information.
