RACING PROGRESSION

1) Club racing is where you are based and ride the majority of your racing. This is your home track.

2) Other club nights in your region. Attending other club day or nights in your region is a good way to try out new tracks in a low key and fun way. Most BMX clubs have a Facebook page with information on when they are running either gates or racing.

3) Interclubs, are when all 3 Wellington clubs race to win the coverted Interclub trophy. This is a great step up from club racing.

4) NQM's (National Qualifying Meet): Meaning that a race meeting has been noted by BMXNZ as a meeting where the rider can compete to take a step in Qualifying for the National Championships. Each completed NQM meeting is one NQM, where riders need a MINIMUM of four(4) NQMs to qualify for Nationals. Usually at these events prizes are awarded to all riders. They may also have a superclass event. To enter is online via the BMXevents.nz website.

5) Regional Championships: Each region holds a regional championship (champs) once a year. It varies across different tracks in that region. Trophies are awarded at these events and points for racing at these events go to towards the BMXNZ National Series & BMXNZ National Team Series. These events are well supported by riders from around NZ and are a great step up from an NQM meet. They may also have a superclass event.

6) North and South Island Championships: These are held once a year. North Island Championships are held over Labour weekend and South Island Championships are usually held during the second weekend of January. These are also NQM events. These events are a great practice for National Championships. A number plate is provided for each of the riders and is given out via the team manager who is a member of your club. The rider must practice and race with this number plate provided.

7) National Championships: This is the pinnacle of BMX racing in NZ. The event is held over the middle weekend of March. Riders from all over NZ race in their age group on both 20" and cruiser class bikes for a coverted NZ number. You need 4 NQM's races to qualify. A number plate is provided for each of the riders and is given out via the team manager who is a member of your club. The rider must practice and race with this number plate provided.

8) Oceania Championships: These are held either in Australia or NZ. Oceania champs are only held in NZ every 4 years. Any NZ BMX racer can enter either in NZ or travel to Australia to race. A number plate is provided for each of the riders and is given out via the team manager who is a member of your club. The rider must practice and race with this number plate provided.

9) World Championships: This is the ultimate racing event for any BMX racer either amatuer or elite. You must be 13 years or over to compete and have come in the top 8 of the National Championships in the previous year.
