Hauora Support

Sustaining Well-being at Kelston Girls' College

At Kelston Girls' College, we place holistic well-being (Hauora) at the absolute core of our educational mission. We believe that when we strengthen and support every aspect of a student’s life, we empower her to thrive both academically and personally.

Our Framework: Te Whare Tapa Whā We guide our approach using the Te Whare Tapa Whā Māori model of health, developed by Sir Mason Durie. We view Hauora as a whare (house)—built on four solid walls and a foundation—where every element must be nurtured to sustain collective and individual well-being.

Integrated Well-being and Mentoring

Well-being is integrated through our daily curriculum and student support systems:

  • Ngā Toa o Kerehana: Our academic mentoring programme ensures every student has a committed Kaiako who monitors their Hauora holistically.

  • Kaimanaaki: Each year group has a Kaimanaaki who oversees pastoral and academic support.

  • Structured Themes: The Ngā Toa o Kerehana sessions incorporate structured themes focused on Hauora throughout the Trimester.

  • Restorative Practice: We utilise Restorative Practice Huis to resolve conflicts and support students and the community.

This holistic approach ensures that every Kelston Girls' College student has the comprehensive support required to sustain their well-being throughout their school journey.
