Kimura Shukokai New Zealand

Kata is a sequence of movements for offense and defense applied against the sequential attacks of several imaginary opponents.”
The original Katas were developed in Okinawa and some have their roots in Chinese Kung fu, and are often referred to as being the Soul of Karate.  Over the years the Katas have evolved in accordance with the times, the environment and the differences in styles.

In the KSI syllabus the Kihon (or basic katas) are the Pinan Katas which are the most fundamental of all Katas and a thorough knowledge of the moves and bunkai (application) is essential before progressing to the more advanced katas.

After these there are numerous advanced Katas which are required for higher grades and gradings as well as for competitions.
While Shito-ryu has a very large number of recognized katas emphasis is placed on the correct application of technique to the moves in katas and an approach of quality rather than quantity is encouraged in our students.

Katas required for Shodan grading are:

Pinans 1 - 5
Matsukaze
Annanko
Bassai dai
Jion
Kosokun shiho
Seienchin
