INFORMATION
Annually, at the beginning of the year we hold our "Mairehau Games" which has a mixture of athletic events, haka and chant stations as well as mini-sided games. This day is typically run on a 'star scoring system' and from this day, we select the high scoring athletes and enter them into the Canterbury Athletic Championships.
CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Canterbury Athletic Champs are held at Nga Puna Wai and over two days (preliminary day and finals night). Students are able to compete in up to 3 events plus a relay team. Students compete against other athletes in their respective age grade. If students finish in the top 8, they progress onto the finals evening. If students finish in the top 5, they then qualify for the South Island Championships.
SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS
South Island Champs is held either in Timaru or Nelson and over a three day weekend (friday-sunday). Athletes who have qualified at their regional competition come together and compete against one another. Athletes who finish in the top 4 of their respective events will then go on to represent their school at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletic Championships later on in the year.
