Junior Netball (Year 1 - 8)

Players (via New Zealand Netball's futureFERNS programme) progress though modified formats of Netball that recognises their stage of physical and mental development. The aim is not only to grow their Netball abilities but also to help with their overall physical literacy which includes confidence, motivation, knowledge and understanding and physical competence.

Year 1 & 2 Junior Netball

Introduces Netball to 5-6 year olds. The aim is to develop fundamental movement and basic Netball skills. Players have a short game following the skills session but do not play in a competition at the EA Networks Stadium in Ashburton. We have adults running these sessions with help from some of our older school girls. Games are 4 v 4 which allows the players to pass, catch and shoot from day one.

Year 3 & 4 Junior Netball

Year 3 & 4 Netball is designed to be fast and fun, maximising participation. The focus for this age group is learning basic skills in a modified game of 5-a-side, using two-thirds of a Netball court. Rotating positions ensures everyone gets an equal chance to develop their skills. Games are 4x 8 minute quarters with 1min break for the quarter times and 2 mins for the half time The Junior Club Captains prepare teams at this age group (they are not trialled) and our teams are selected to be fairly even.

Year 5 & 6 Junior Netball

The 6 v 6 game is fast and provides players with lots of touches on the ball to enhance skill development and enjoyment. With only three positions on court it means the game is less complicated for children and easier for coaches to ensure the players learn the skills relevant to all and to provide them with equal opportunities. The Junior Club Captains prepare teams at this age group (they are not trialled) and our teams are selected to be fairly even.

Year 7 & 8 Junior Netball

Players have developed a considerable understanding of the game and are now playing 7 v 7. The emphasis is on converting fundamental movement and basic Netball skills to foundation Netball skills. Performance, challenge and playing are key motives for this age group. Playing at least half a game will give each player the opportunity to participate and develop. Players start to specialise in one or two positions or in a certain area of the court i.e. shooting, defending, circle. Full height goal post used - 3.05 metres. At this level our players get to trial for team selection. Teams will usually have a mixture of year 7 & 8 players

Note: Trials are held for this grade, please see our 2024 Trials Dates page for more information.
