Nelson Hinemoa Croquet Club

Have a Go

Visitors are always welcome. Members are able to introduce someone to the game with the prospect of them wanting to join, their first visit being free. If family members or friends are just wanting a game there is a $5.00 per adult green fee, $2.00 for children. All equipment is provided and the cuppa is free. Mallets are also available to purchase when you are ready.

The two main types of Croquet, traditional Association, or the modern Golf Croquet, both provide an effective low-intensity workout. The basics of the games are easily learnt, the hard bit is to master the strategies and the techniques to apply these; just be the first to hit your balls through the hoops, remembering the margin for error is 1/64 of an inch hoop clearance allowed for the ball to pass through, and your opponent will be doing their best to hit you away or blocking your ball.  Croquet requires precision, an ability to gauge the pace of the ball, strength and co-ordination, combining both mental and physical skills, a good exercise for mind and body. It has an enjoyable social side by being part of a team, and many appreciate the more forgiving nature of the game on the body.

Participation is inexpensive and very accessible. NHCC (Nelson Hinemoa Croquet Club) has some of the best facilities in all of Australasia, with nine full lawns on Rutherford Park, equipment available and comfortable club rooms with full kitchen facilities, all in the CBD of our wonderful top-of-the south Nelson City. The Club strives to provide a friendly, inclusive and supportive environment for the most competitive with world ranking, to the casual player, playing for fun and friendship.

For an introduction to croquet you will learn the basics of Golf Croquet. Many players will choose to continue playing this form of the game, while some may move onto Association Croquet, the original, longer form of the game. Our intoductory offer is $20 for 4 coaching sessions and the opportunity to join  social play on Golf croquet club days. To become a first-year member, you would then pay an additional $80.00. The following year you will pay the current full membership fee of $200.

NHCC caters for group visits. Corporate, social or school groups are invited to have a go. Members will be on hand to show visitors how to play, set things up, and help with matching you up with all the equipment you will need. Cost for school groups by arrangement; for corporate or social groups cost is $10.00 per person. Contact our club captain, Alan Winwood, for details. (027 4387 552)
