Fun Football – Grades 8 & 9
For children born in 2018 & 2017
Fun Football is the next exciting step in our junior pathway, where players continue to grow their skills, confidence, and love for the game in a supportive and engaging environment.
From 2026, our Fun Football teams will play within a local hub alongside Tikipunga, Onerahi, and Manaia Tigers. This hub model allows for consistent, quality game time while strengthening connections across our local football community. Games are played weekly, alternating between Tikipunga and Onerahi.
At this stage, football is played in smaller formats (such as 5v5), which are designed specifically for junior development. These formats provide:
* Increased involvement and more touches on the ball – Smaller team sizes mean more contact with the ball, more goal-scoring opportunities, and higher overall engagement, which increases enjoyment.
* Accelerated skill development – Frequent interactions with teammates and opponents in tighter spaces help develop technical ability, fitness, and decision-making skills more quickly.
* Better preparation for 11v11 football – By progressing through age-appropriate formats and moving to the full 11v11 game at an older age (typically U14), players are technically better prepared and more confident.
* Improved player retention – With fewer periods of standing and more active participation, children stay engaged and are more likely to continue playing long term.
* Earlier goalkeeper development – Updated rules introduce goalkeepers from 5v5 (U8), ensuring players in this position are more involved and develop their skills earlier.
Fun Football keeps the focus on enjoyment, development, and positive encouragement — creating confident, capable players who love being part of the game.
