Girls Football at Ngunguru FC

Ngunguru FC welcomes and encourages girls to play football at all ages and ability levels.

In our First Kicks grades, girls typically play in mixed teams alongside boys. From Grades 8–9 (Fun Football), there may be the option to join an all-girls team. Depending on numbers, these teams may play in either the mixed league or a girls-only league.

From Grades 10–13 (Mini Football), girls may also have the option to play in an all-girls team in either a girls league or mixed league. The availability of girls teams and leagues can vary from season to season depending on registration numbers.

Our aim is to provide flexible options so girls can play in the environment that suits them best.

Why Girls Football?

Sport research and policy guidance suggests that around the ages of 11–13 many girls begin to prefer playing in girls-only teams or leagues. This can help create a supportive environment where girls may feel more comfortable participating, developing skills, and building confidence. As a result, many football organisations around the world introduce or expand girls-only playing opportunities from around age 12.

At the same time, mixed-gender football continues to work well for many players. For this reason, many junior football programmes aim to offer both mixed and girls-only pathways where possible.

At Ngunguru FC, we aim to provide opportunities that support participation, enjoyment, and long-term involvement in football for all girls.
