9th Dec - Jonathon Lord and Erin O'Brien are the Secondary Schools Champs for 2012. See results.

24th Oct - The lap times from the Long Distance Champs have now been uploaded. As you can imagine they make for some interesting reading. The Judges Summary sheet is also attached.

21st Oct 2012 - When you look back in ten or 20 years then all you will see is the result of the 50km Championship with Graeme Jones winning by nearly 3K over the ever young Mike Parker. This was not the story at all. What we need to get into the annals of history is Graeme Jones the  "Gentleman champion". We also need to record the heroic battles into a gale force westerly wind (the wind was so strong it blew my hat off, so! I hear you say, but hey. my hat was made in Wellington). Mike Parker had gone through about 40km and had gradually slowed over a few ks. Remarkably he was still walking legally even though he was starting to wobble; at the point he knocked a cone over I thought it was all over. Graeme caught up with him (3 laps ahead at that time) and nursed him through to the drinks station. He got sustenance into Mike and then stopped at the drinks station and made up the right formulas for Mike. About 5 minutes after this you could see Mike had a whole new lease of life and he carried on to finish in a galant 2nd place. Well done Graeme you have shown the true meaning of Sportsmanship and a a worthy New Zealand Champion. Well done to all the competitors today battling those conditions showed true character. With Brooke Cowsill withdrawing from the Senior Women's 15km because of illness we were robbed of another intriguing battle between Rozie and Brooke. Make sure you are at the track and field champs at the end of March (Auckland) because there will be a third walker in the mix. Lesley Cantwell looked very strong over the last few K today. I haven't seen the K splits yet but they should show interesting reading in the last 5K and at the end Lesley was less than a minute adrift. See attached for the Championship results and write up from David Lonsdale.

30th Sept 2012 - Mike Parker battled all the way with Graeme Jones in the RWNZ 35km championship at Ngataringa Bay, Auckland today. Mike finished in 3h26m12s, just 11 seconds ahead of Graeme Jones. See the attached for Grant Pepper's write up and detailed result.

1st September - The Athletics New Zealand Road Champs were raced on the Wellington waterfront today. The wind was keen (but probably a zephyr by Wellington standards). There were 38 starters covering the various age groups from 16, 19, Seniors and a multitude of masters. Mike Parker walked away with the Senior men's 10K title in 50m18s. His only competition was Rosie Robinson who chased him all the way to retain her Senior Women's title in 50m34s. Early in the race Brooke Cowsill made a valiant effort to stay with these 2, but had to settle for 2nd in the Senior women's event in 52m2s. Lesley Cantwell was 3rd in 55m11s. Mike Morrisey was 2nd male and 1st Vet in a very good time of 52m14s. Courtney Ruske was once again the stand out Junior winning the W19 5km in a great time of 24m46s. Other than the wind, conditions and the surface were excellent for walking. Judging was diificult at times with the continual stream of people, bikes, trikes and skate boards hindering the view. A full list of the walking results are here. More detailed write up of race can be read here (thank you David Lonsdale). Also have a look at the Judges summary sheet.

26th Aug - Overcast conditions with very little wind greeted the 1 hour walkers in Manawatu today. The conditions were therefore perfect with another excellent event put on by Sue Hoskin, Peter Zwart and their excellent team of helpers. Six gold standards; two silver standards and six bronze standards were achieved. On top of this 2 New Zealand age group records were achieved in the 10,000 metres. These were from Sue Hoskin and Jackie Wilson. Competitors had distances measured at 1 hour and were allowed to complete 10,000 metres if they wanted too, which many took advantage of. Many thanks to Peter Wrigley who gave an excellent talk on his experience of the Olympic Games after having judged in all 3 walking championships. Only 1 DQ today. Read all the results here.

19th Aug - 2 starters in the Waikato/BOP Road race walk champs raced at the Lakes in Tauranga. Mark Gray (Tauranga Ramblers) finished in 66m49s and Penny Purcell who finished in 67m5s, but was unfortunately disqualified.

18th Aug - the Otago Road Champs is raced over 10km from Clyde to Alexandra. Although not an official Race Walk Championship, Rosie Robinson did a great time of 49m3s.

18th Aug - Canterbury Road Champs were held at Pegasus in North Canterbury on Saturday. Senior Women's champ is Kate Newitt in 58m56s. Standout in the 5K was Courtney Ruske in the W19 in a time of 24m27s.

18th Aug - The Wellington Centre Road Champs were held in Trentham on Saturday. The Senior women's champ is Natasha Murrihy in 59m16s with Terri Grimmett in second in 60m34s. John Leonard is the Senior men's champ in 66m12s. Stuart Hood took out the 5K M19 in a time of 28m55s. A full list of results can be read here.

18th Aug - there were 32 starters (19 A grade and 13 B grade) in the TET Athletics Taranaki Road Champs in Hawera today. This event was held in warm conditions on a 1km excellent flat course. Eric Kemsley was first male home in 53m40s and Rachel Gilberd first female in 54m4s. Peter Fox walked an excellent race to take second and Harry Terwiel 3rd male. Vanessa Lowl was 2nd female and Theresa Large 3rd. A race report can be read here. Summary of preliminary results are here.

12th Aug - Phew - I am not sure about everyone else, but I have just had my first meeting and it started with the following "My name is Alan and I am an Olympics watcher holic". I decided to take the last week off work (what a struggle it will be in the morning) to watch the Athletics. I haven't missed much and am now exhausted. What an amazing week it has been, I know this is a Race Walking website so just excuse me while I blog for a moment. Among the highlights of the week were of course Quentin achieving 30th place in the 50km walk with nearly 4 minutes off his PB yet again - nearly 12 minutes reduction in 12 months - Quentin we salute you and are with you every step of the way (quite bit behind though you walk too fast) as you progress towards Rio. The 50km walk last night had to be one of the most exciting races of any event - how many times did the lead change hands, how many times did walkers like Jared come from behind when they looked as though they were out of the medals. What worthy medalists they all were. The women's 20km walk - if you didn't watch it, then somehow get a way to watch it. I have kept it on my Sky HD, along with the 50km. This was abasolute domination by the Russians and Chinese. The pace never faltered, it was metronomic in it's nature, 4:15 per km for lap after lap by Kaniskina which related to a 1:25 20km and a world record. At about 4kms to go the unthinkable started to happen; the young pretender at 20 years of age, Lashmanova, started to close. So it proved, with about 200 metres to go she passed Kaniskina to take gold in a new world record of 1:25:02, beating Kaniskina by 7 seconds.

Lots of reports to read; far easier for me to take from the web and summarise than try to report myself. Firstly an excellent report from Murray McKinnon about Quentin's race (wasn't until I read this that I knew Q had got 2 reds, so perfect race really ) - Quentin Rew fantastic 30th in PB

The following are reports from the IAAF website, I have summarised the results, but you can also follow links to a breakdown of times and positions every 2km lap. Men's 20km race - Men's 50km race - Women's 20km race.

15th July - Results from 10,000 metres IAAF World Junior Champs from Barcelona - Male and Female.

15th July - Racewalking Auckland Harry Kerr Centennial Relay - Mt Smart Stadium

In the 5th staging of the Harry Kerr Centennial Relay, the Racewalking Auckland A team eclipsed the efforts of the event's initial 2008 winners in, recording a race record of 4:23:41. Matthew Holcroft who took 48:18 for his 10,000m leg was the fastest individual athlete in the event.
The other members of the winning team were Mike Parker, Jared Free, Mike Morrisey and Brooke Cowsill.

The visiting Scottish Athletics team from Wellington was placed second with a time of 5:16:09.
The 5x10000m relay, held at the Mt Smart stadium, in wet conditions, was also a Racewalking NZ championship event.

For the first time, a Junior Relay was included on the program. Two Racewalking Auckland junior teams staged a good battle over a total distance of 8400m, with the Racewalking Auckland  Team 1 of Euan McDougall, Nathan McDougall, Mesha White and Andrew Jackson prevailing. The winning team recorded 57:29, a 2:20 margin over their competitors.
The Kerr Rowland Track race, an individual event over 3500m was won by Tony Sargisson in 19:10, ahead of Simon Baker and Rodney Gillum.
Baker, an outstanding Australian racewalker of the 1980s and 1990s, was in the country to conduct a coaching workshop which was held the previous day. A summary of the results are here. For individual results goto RWA website.

24th June - Quite a few of our members took part in the Wellington Marathon events on Sunday. By all accounts it was perfect conditions (in between the North Wester and Southerly - how did they organise this!) The Men's marathon winner was Peter Zwart (Palmerston North) in 4h26m33s, followed 2 minutes later by Harry Terwiel (New Plymouth), 3rd was Mike Nield (New Plymouth) and then Joff Hulbert (Napier). The women's marathon was won by Anne Fraser (New Plymouth) in 5h8m5s. Alana Barber (Wellington) was first female (and first home) in the half marathon in a net time of 2:05:56, Vanessa Lowl (New Plymouth) was 2nd and Terri Grimmett 3rd female. In the men's half marathon the ever young Jeff Wells (New Plymouth) at 68, just pipped Dave Wackrow by 10 seconds (New Plymouth) in a gun time of 2h12m12s with Ian Baily (Palmerston North) 3rd. Full results can be read here.

17th June - Quentin Rew 14th in Milan in the IAAF Challenge Series 20km in a time of 1:33:13. See attached write up from Tim Erickson and Diego Sampaolo's reports.

17th June - New Plymouth - I only post so many individual club events in the Results page, with this one I made an exception. Last year we tried out a new course on the "Links Housing" development and had some remarkable times achieved. The course is flat and has a super smooth asphalt surface. We were a bit dubious about the course measurement so this year ensured the Jones counter was correctly calibrated and placed the cones very carefully. Once again the times were amazing. On a personal front, I know I am regaining my fitness but to do a PB by 30 seconds is remakable! I attach the times and write up for your interest.

10th June - the Annual Open Walk in New Plymouth was another very successful weekend. The format again this year was races over 10km and 15km starting at 1:00 pm on the Saturday, then dinner and prize giving in the evening. Sunday morning once again had a coaching session at the TET stadium in Inglewood. This was a very interesting session with Pilates, Video analysis and then some track work. In attendance were George McConachy, Quentin Rew and Rachel Gilberd. The weather was perfect as it always is in Taranaki. There was much interest on the Saturday afternoon with Matthew trying for a qualifying time over 10K for Iaaf World Junior Champs and Quentin Rew making his last appearance in New Zealand before heading to Europe and then the Olympics. Also in attendance was Rozie Robinson who heads to Cairns at the end of the month to represent New Zealand at the Oceania Regional Championships. Quentin and Matthew were together for the first 5K, before Quentin had to stop for a couple of comfort breaks. Matthew realising he was not on the pace for a qualifying time, settled down to a pace that saw him take 4 minutes off his PB for the 15km and to also take out the RWNZ 15km championship. See here for a report and a summary of the results. Result details are here and lap times can be analysed here. (Apologies some missing due to technical issue).

20th May 2012 - whether you take part in the Annual Ekiden relay in Trentham for the Competition, the socialising, the laughter or the camaraderie it doesn't matter. You couldn't help going away again this year looking forward to the next one - especially as the weather was a perfect Autumnal day - no wind and plenty of sunshine (the early morning frost was a shocker for us from warmer climes). Well done to Wellington Scottish for another well organised event. Here is David Lonsdale's report from the weekend. The overall team results can be read here and the individual lap times are here.

30th April - - read a report from Bart Jones on the fantastic success that Terri Grimmet, Daphne Jones and Jackie Wilson had at the Australian Masters Athletics Championships - 6th to 9th April. Well worth a read - the Masters have been hot in the Wellington region this year with many Regional records being broken as well as New Zealand ones. Really good to hear some good news on the Masters front after the Oceania debacle. The masters were obviously well received over the ditch - so might be worth marking this event on your calenders for next year - maybe shopping combined with a walk - can you think of a better combo - actually I can - a Barossa Valley Shiraz and finish off with dark chocolate in Adelaide. Whoops I digress.

Jackie Wilson at the Australian Masters Athletics Championships

30th April - The annual Peter Tearle Trophy took place in Wellington on the 21st April - here is a write up from David Lonsdale.

1st April - results from the North and South Island Secondary Schools Champs can be accessed. Srtandout performances were Courtney Ruske  who achieved 9m30.93s in the 2,000 metres - slightly over a second adrift of Kate Newitt's meet record. Jonathan Lord could not quite match his brother's record in this meet for the 3,000 metres, but did extremely well considering he is on the way back after injury and covered the 3,000 metres in 13m39.98s.

27th Mar - Excellent report on the Track and Field Champs to be read here courtesy of Jim Leppik. With the improvement we have seen in Quentin, Matthew and Rozie since they went for training to Thredbo in January, the question has to be asked - how do we get more walkers over there? Is it possible to get a camp setup here or is part of it being with such high calibre walkers and the whole motivation angle? It is certainly working whatever it is!

24th Mar - Dudince, Slovakia. Quentin Rew achieved an Olympic qualifying time of 3h58m48s in the 50km in Slovaki. Quentin says - "achieved my goal of an A qualifier for London, but disappointed to have wasted all that effort in going 11 seconds faster than necessary"! This is fantastic news for Quentin and a shot in the arm for Racewalking in New Zealand. An extract of the 50km result is attached and follow the link if you want to see the results from the whole meeting. Lots of PBs and SBs achieved.

23rd to 25th Mar - Congratulations to Scott Nelson, Rozie Robinson, Courtney Ruske and Matthew Holcroft who were all double winners at the track and field champs in Waitakere at the weekend. Conditions were hot on the Friday for the 3,000 metres and perfect for racing on the Sunday in the 10k and 20k. In fact it had been raining only 30 minutes before the start but was perfect by the time racing got under way. The course on Sunday was perfect - a closed road with no gradient! In the 3,000 metres Matthew Holcroft took fastest time of 12m39.86s to take the M20 with Scott Nelson second home to win the men's in 13m4.52s. In all walks over the weekend there was only 1DQ and 2 DNF which is good to see. See attached for an extract of the walks results.  See this link for a great article on Athletics NZ website on Scott Nelson's performance.

17th March - Conditions were warm for the Wellington one hour track walk at Newtown Park on the 17th March, the walking was obviously hot as several competitors carried on to do 10,000 metres. In doing so Sue Hoskin bettered the NZ Masters Women's time for W60. Sue did a very slick 1:03:37.51. For a list of all theresults see attached

11th March - Results from Taranaki Centre 3,000 metres champs and from Manawatu/Wanganui Centre 5,000 metre champs.

11th March - Quentin Rew took out the Wellington Centre 20km Champs in 1h39m8s and carried on to complete 35km before heading to Europe for a 50km IAAF race. The 20km was raced on a new course in the Upper Hutt. Alana Barber was 1st senior woman in 2h4m10s. Stuart Hood was first M19 over 10km in 57m53s with Natasha Murrihy completing the W19 10k event in 56m19s. Complete results can be read here.

6th March - The New Zealand Masters Track and Field Champs were held in Auckland over the weekend from the 2nd to the 4th March. The outstanding performances were from Mike Parker who was 1st overall in both the 3,000 metres and the 10km road race. When you analyse the performances based on Howard Grubb indices then you get a picture of just how good, both performances are around a 91 or 92% which is the performance of an International Athlete - very few at the Games achieved that in any discipline. Marlene White was the next best performed athlete achieving 1st woman home in both events and in fact second behind Mike in both cases. I believe only 2 DQs from the events. For an extract of the walking results from the Masters please read the attached.

13th Feb - It was pretty well ideal conditions for the 2nd year of the Frontrunner half marathon and 10K along the waterfront in New Plymouth on Sunday. Once again Matthew Holcroft went home with the money for first place in the 10K in a time of 48m38s - his win looked effortless; I wish him all the best in Hobart later this month. Eric Kemsley, after a few weeks recovery, took 2nd in a time of 59m18s. Rachel Gilberd was first in the women's 10K in a time of 59m39s. The half marathon had wins for Harry Terwiel (2h6m31s) and Vanessa Lowl (2h12m37s). Dave Wackrow, after gaining 3 golds at the Oceania champs, still managed second in a time of 2h10m54s with Mike Nield 3rd. Donna Roderick left Taumarunui at about 3:00 am to take 2nd place in a smart 2h15m49s, Nicky Smart was 3rd.

11th Feb - results from the final walking event at the Oceania Masters Athletics Champions, the 3,000 metres, can be found here. Well done to all those who competed.  Mark Gray says that the 3 outstanding walkers of the week were Dean Nipperress (M40), Heather Carr (W60) and Mike Parker (M55), Mike beat all walkers except for Dean who is roughly 18 years younger. Mark said that Dean was not only an impressive walker but also very encouraging to other athletes and helped one kiwi walker who having been dqd in an earlier walk gave them enough tips to help them complete their final one. Thanks Dean. Heather Carr was not only an outstanding walker but also one of the top performers at the games. At 60+ years of age she not only dominated the women's walking but also won the W60 steeplechase and Cross Country (this on same same morning she walked the 10K!). The next Oceania Masters is in January 2014 in Bendigo, Victoria - so make sure you acclimatise!

9th Feb- results from 5,000 metres Oceania Masters Athletics Championships held in Tauranga today, again thank you to Mark. Good luck to all those who are competing in the 3,000 metres on Saturday.

11th Dec - In the New Zealand Secondary Schools Track and Fields Champs in Wellington, Courtney Ruske (2,000 metres) and Matthew Holcroft (3,000 metres) became the 2011 champions. Courtney was more than 90 seconds ahead of the only North Island female (Renee Moratti) in a time of 9m19.21s. Matthew had a closer contest in his event but was still 28 seconds clear of Jonathon Lord in a time of 13m13.16s. Full results are attached.

1st Nov - Detailed results from the Long Distance Championships can be read here (Require Excel or Excel reader).

30th Oct - Congratulations to Graeme Jones who is the 50km Champion for 2011. He did it the hard way by having to walk the first two hours on his own before the other competitors started in the "shorter" long distance walks. Graeme's time was 4h46m37s. Rozie Robinson retained her long distance 15km championship in a time of 1h21m05s, she also carried on to do a PB in the 20km in 1h49m43s. Quentin Rew showed his class by winning the non championship Trans Tasman 20km in a smart time of 1h33m37s. Here is a detailed report from David Lonsdale and a summary of all results including non championships. Also included is the Judges Summary sheet which always makes interesting viewing - there was good consistency amogst most of the judges.

23rd Oct - Congratulations to the RaceWalking Auckland 5,000 metres Club Champions, Men - Mike Parker in 24m26, Senior Women - Larissa Wildwood in 33m8s and Junior Men's Champion - Paul Jackson in 28m3s. Read the attached for detailed results and write up from the Yvette Williams Track.

15th Oct - Congratulations to Wendy Healey, Nyle Sunderland and Neroli Amyes, all of Nelson who each broke New Zealand Age group recocords in the South Island Masters 10,000 metres walk. Wendy Healey (W35-39) 56m16.92; Nyle Sunderland (W40-44) 56m34.65 and Neroli Amyes (W55-59) 57m30.72. For a write up and also link to the South Island Masters website, read the attached - well worth the read.

2nd Oct - Mark Gray thought he would have a break from all the rugby so decided to walk for 12 hours instead. Well done to Mark who managed 81km in his 12 hours. Read about his efforts here, along with Brenda Farley who thought that 12 hours wasn't enough and did 24 instead!

2nd Oct - Well done to Harry Terwiel (2h8m16s) and Vanessa Lowl (2h15m21s) who were 1st male and female walkers home in the Taranaki Daily News Half Marathon in New Plymouth on Sunday. For all the results follow the link.

18th Sept - Harry Terwiel and Rachel Gilberd are the 10km TRWC Champions for 2011. In the penultimate event of the season, Harry got a PB of 55m6s to be a worthy winner of the title. Rachel easily defended her title in 1h1m22s. A write up and results can be found here.

18th Sept - After the last race in the Auckland Race Walking Junior Series, Andrew Jackson is the U19 2011 Champion and Mesha White is the U14 Champion. The latest reult is here. To see the series goto the Auckland website.

11th Sept - Well done to Mike Parker who won the 35km RWNZ Championship in Auckland in a time of 3h36m23s. This event was raced in terrible conditions, just to enter and finish showed a great strength of character. Attached is a write up  from David Sim.

3rd Sept - Well done to Graeme Jones who walked the Hawkes Bay marathon in 3h44m53s to win for a second year in a row. Graeme was obviously in a hurry to finish so he could get home in time to watch his protege Quentin in the 50km walk today. Robyn Wolfsbauer was first female in 4h56m54s. Also well done to Joff who took second place.

3rd Sept - Well done to Quentin Rew who managed to survive the heat and humidity of Daegu today in completing the 50km IAAF World Championship in 24th place. Quentin finished in a time of 4h8m46s with no red cards on the board. 12 walkers were DQd and 6 walkers did not finish. After an initial cameo by 2 Korean walkers at the front of the field, Yohan Diniz (France) shot into the lead walking close to world record pace. Initially nobody chased until Nathan Deakes bolted from the pack and joined Diniz at the front. Once again the Russians were in force and Sergey Bakulin (Russia) cleared from the pack into 3rd. Diniz started getting batons from the Judges and soon had two cards. This did not slow him and not long after the hour mark he was gone. Nathan Deakes increased the tempo and looked extremely strong until about 28K. At this point Bakulin started closing the gap, Deakes K times were slowing and he looked in pain. At just after 32K Bakulin took the lead. Deakes stopped several times to try to free up his hamstring, but to no avail he pulled out at about 34K. Jared Tallent (Australi) walked his own race and started looking very strong with about 10K to go. At 40K he was in second place about 2 minutes behind Bakulin. He gradually ate into this lead and looked comfortable for second place. With just under 2K to go Tallent was caught by a fast finishing  Denis Nizhegorodov (Russian world record holder). So once again a dominant display by the Russians, Bakulin first in 3h41m24s and Nizhegorodov second in 3h42m45s.. Excellent walking by the Australians as well with Tallent taking Bronze and Luke Adams getting 5th. Results can be read here.

31st Aug - Looked pretty hot and steamy in Daegu again today for the Women's IAAF World Champs 20km race walk. What an array of talent on show - the top 10 from the world champs of 2 years ago were all there amongst the 50 starters. The main contenders again were the Russians and Chinese; with a Russian woman having won the last 6 World Champs title. The current world record holder Vera Sokolova (Russia) versus the World Champ Olga Kaniskina and Hong Liu (China) 3rd 2 years ago with Anisya Kirdyapkina (Russia) thrown into the mix at just 21 years old. It certainly suggested a very competitive and intriguing race. We certainly weren't disappointed as the race unfolded. Just like the men's race the early kilometres had a very bunched field while the pace remained moderate. All 3 Russians were amongst this bunch, never far from the front, along with Liu. Pascual of Spain, Saltanovic of Lithuania and Clare Talent of Australia were prominent early on. the pace quickened after 5km with the Russians starting to surge and break up the field. By the 10km mark the pace was hotter still with a 22m47s second 5K and the pack got smaller. The 3 Russians with Liu and Fuchise of Japan (hanging in but not comfortable) started to break from the rest of the field. Initially it was Sokolova who was setting the pace and piling the pressure on with Kaniskina looking strained. At about 12km Kaniskina and Kirdyapkina surged once more and worked together to break Liu and Sokolova. Sure enough Sokolova started to lose ground and eventually finished in 11th place. At 14km Kaniskina put the hammer down and went on to win by 18 seconds from Liu and a further 13 seconds back to Kirdyapkina. Riguado of Italy and Qieyang of China walked at their own pace to come through to take 4th and 5th places. Kaniskina has now taken the champs for the 3rd time and the 7th time for a Russian. The full results can be seen here. Also have a look at the IAAF official website for all the Championship timetable and results.

30th Aug - Judges Summary sheet from the one hour event in Palmerston North.

29th Aug - Not sure how many of you managed to watch the men's IAAF World Champs 20km race walk from Daegu yesterday, but I found it fascinating viewing. Looked pretty hot and humid out there! The Judges had their work cut out in the early stages of the race - the initial pace was fairly pedestrian, you know at about 4m20s per K - so the field was tightly bunched with maybe 8 athletes wide. After a few laps Rubino of Italy took a commanding lead and was joined by Suzuki of Japan. These 2 were really pushing the envelope, particularly Rubino and it was fairly clear that he was lifting. Sure enough batons started coming out from the Judges. Rubino was disqualified and Suzuki received 2 red cards (he faded to 8th position). Borchin of Russia the defending champion, along with Wang of China and Kanaykin of Russia didn't panic even when they were 200 metres adrift of Suzuki. They timed their surge to perfection. Borchin successfully defended his title in 1:19:56 with Kanaykin coming through for 2nd. Lopez of Colombia had a fantastic last few Ks and came through to edge Wang for 3rd place. Full results are here.

29th Aug - I am sure this will be of interest to some of you - the Judges Summary sheet from the National Road champs in Wellington. The Judging as you can see is fairly consistent. It was quite challenging at times with many people getting in between the Judges and Athletes and also many members of the Public stopping to ask questions about the race. If you would like to put names to numbers of Athletes, then here is the list of entries for the event.

28th Aug - Latest result from Race Walking Auckland.

28th Aug - This year's one hour track event at Massey in Palmerston North was raced in perfect conditions, with very little wind. There were 18 starters in the A grade event and 8 in the Freestyle event. 5 Golds were achieved. This is a very enjoyable event, whatever your level of walking. How many races do you start and finish at the same time as the fastest in the race! Put this in your calenders for next year - same weekend as this - a late morning start so easy for many to travel in the morning. Full results can be read here. Here is a table of the standards to be achieved for the Gold, Silver and Bronze - now you have a whole year to train!

20th Aug - Rosie Robinson and Mike Parker are the 2011 Athletics NZ Road Walk Champions. After a week of dreadful weather, howling Southerlies and snow, this event was raced along the Wellington waterfront in reasonable conditions. The weather was still on the cold side, but it was a gentle Southerly which made for hot racing and PBs in the 5 and 10km championships. With Quentin overseas getting ready for the 50km World Champs, Mike Parker stamped his authority on the Men's race, his only real competition coming from Rosie Robinson. In fact it was Rosie who took the lead and for K after K, Mike played catch up. In fact he did catch her on the last lap and pulled away, but Rosie is one determined walker and nearly caught him before the line. Mike won the Men's race in a time of 49m58s (yes under 50 after just missing by 2 seconds last year) and Rosie in a PB of 50m2s is the Women's Race Walk Champion. Peter Baillie took 2nd and Bob Gardner 3rd in the Men's with Alana Barber and Lesley Cantwell taking the minor women's placings. There were some exceptional times today with Jonathan Lord covering the M16 5km in 24m23s and Courtney Ruske the W16 in 25m15s. Golden girl Nyle Sunderland also had a PB in the W40 in a time of 56m1s. Full results can be found here.

6th August - Mark Gray is the Race Walk Road Champ for 2011 in a time of 66m40s for the 10km. Official results are here.

6th August - Nyle Sunderland in a time of 25m51s is the 2011 Athletics Nelson Club Road Walk Champ over 5km.  Peter Hague is the men's champ in a very good time of 28m56s. Nyle didn't have it all her own way with Wendy Healey (when do we see you Nationally again Wendy!) recording a great time of 26m45s. For the full results see the attachment.

6th August - Rosie Robinson was the first walker home in the Clyde to Alexandra Road Race, she recorded an excellent time of 51m6s for the 10km. For other results from this race see the Otago Harriers website.

6th August - Canterbury  Road Champs from Pegasus Bay, Christchurch can be found here.

6th August - Congratulations to Rachel Gilberd and Des Hussey who are the Taranaki Road champs for 2011, raced in Inglewood today. Des representing Stratford, has only been walking for the last year, but managed to match Rachel stride for stride. Rachel's time was 56m40s and Des managed 56m42s - nearly 9 minutes quicker than a year ago. Renee Moratti took the W16 in a time of 33m9s. A report on the race is here and the Official results are now attached.

6th August - Peter  Baillie took out the Men's 10K Wellington road race championships today in a time of 57m36s; Natasha Murrihy won the women's in a time of 56m28s. The men's 19, 5K champs was won by Stuart Hood in 27m55s. This was a better course for walkers this year after Peter Wrigley and John Leonard pro-actively helped the organisers work out the best section of the allocated runner's course. There was still a rise and fall, but it was manageable this year, although the camber was quite steep. See the full breakdown of the results here.

1st August - Mike Parker and Larissa Wildsmith are the 10,000 metres Racewalking Auckland champions for 2011, raced recently at the Douglas Track in Waitakere. See full report and results here.

17th July - Nyle Sunderland has achieved her 3rd gold medal at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Sacramento today to cap off a very successful Games for the New Zealand Athletes. 9th July - Well done to Mike Parker who has continued the success of the New Zealand Athletes in the 5,000 metres winning a bronze medal in Sacramento today. Don't have any details, other than the result but it must have been an exciting race with less than a second separating Mike and the 4th placed walker! Mike's M55 event results are here, sadly Peter Fox has not overcome his injury and failed to start. Full results can be found here.

8th July - Nyle Sunderland took gold in the W40 to 45 age group in the 5,000 metres at the World Masters Athletics Championships on the first day of walking events in Sacramento. Conditions were extremely hot, but Shirley Barber and Sue Hoskin both managed to get Bronze medals. Eric Kemsley was 8th in a time of 26m 40s. See a breakdown of these results here. Congratulations to Andrew Jamieson (Australia) who took gold in the M65.  To see full results go to WMA web page.

25th June - Incorporated into the TRWC Open Walks in New Plymouth today was the RWNZ 15km championship. An excellent field took to the streets on Saturday with 40 walkers in total ranging in age from 9 years old to 83 years young. Quentin Rew and Graeme Jones went heel to toe for 15km and although the lead changed a few times in the last lap, nothing separated them on the line and a dead heat was declared. Both carried on to complete 30km. Matthew Holcroft took 3rd place. In the Women's race, Alana Barber stamped her authority from the get go and easily took gold from Rachel Gilberd and Terri Grimmett. 3 documents to view - 1. Summary of the results. 2. Full results. 3. Race report. Many thanks for all the walkers who made the journey to New Plymouth, in particular Wellington who were out in force. The coaching day was not held on the Sunday this year, but instead walkers were enthralled by Quentin Rew as an after dinner speaker on the Saturday evening.

5th June - The Racewalking Auckland A team retained their Harry Kerr trophy  in a time of 4:56:54 at the Mount Smart Stadium. For a report on the event see the attached; the Harry Kerr results are here and also the Kerr Rowland 3500 track race.

22nd May - The Scottish Ekiden Relays (including the RWNZ Relay Championships) were held in absolutely perfect conditions on Sunday at the Trentham Upper hutt circuit. No wind (yes in Wellington as well I know), some cloud, good temperature. Race Walking Auckland once again proved too strong for the other teams in taking the RWNZ Relay Championship in a time of 3:56:13, Taranaki Race Walking Club were second and Wellington Scottish Gold were 3rd. In the Wellington Scottish B grade trophy, Taranaki Race Walking Club were 1st in a time of 4:25:55, with Manawatu Striders second and Wellinton Scottish Red 3rd. See the full results and lap by lap breakdown here.

10th May - the Chocolate Race took place at QE2 park in Paekakariki on the 7th May. This is a Turkey Trot type event where closest to their estimated time wins (no watches of course). This event was organised by Olympic, but mainly Scottish Walkers took part. The event was 2 laps of 3K each and was raced in perfect conditions - calm, 17 degrees and overcast. Race results are attached.

3rd May - David Sim has supplied the splits from the IAAF Race Walking Challenge from Taicang, China. They make very interesting reading, see details here.

24thApril - Quentin Rew has taken 18 minutes off his PB for the 50km walk. Quentin finished in 14th position in the IAAF Race Walking Challenge in Taicang, China. He recorded a time of 4h6m57s which is well under the 4h9m for a B standard qualifying time for the Daegu World Championships in August. According to the Athletics New Zealand website,  it was Rew’s third ever 50km race walk, with his progression to his latest effort being October 2009 4h 52m 55s and October 2010 4h 25m 19s. He is now ranked third all time in New Zealand behind Craig Barrett 3h 48m 7s and Tony Sargisson 3h 58m 5s.
Chinese athletes took the first three placings in the race in China, Si Tianfeng winning in 3h 38m 48s. Chinese Athletes dominated the 20km and 50km events. Here is a link to the Official results.

Rodney Thorne and Shirley Barber are the Racewalking Auckland club champs. this event was raced on the Yvette Williams Track, Pakuranga. David's winning time was 1h59m17s. Shirley's winning time was 2h47m25s. Overview of results are here. See the full results and report at the Racewalking Auckland website.

5th April - Jonathon Lord and Courtney Ruske take out the South Island Secondary Schools Championships in Timaru - see results here.

5th April - 1 hour track walk from Wellington - 19th March at Newtown Park - See results here.

5th April - Michael Holcroft and the Inglewood Moratti girls dominate the North Island Secondary Schools Champs in Hamilton. See the results here.

29th March - The stand out results in the Track and Field Championships in Dunedin over the weekend are - Quentin Rew has broken the magical 1 hour 28 minutes (1:27:47), which just over 6 months ago would have got him to the Commonwealth Games. Well done Quentin shows dedicated training and excellent improvement in your times. A sub 12 in the 3000 as well (11:51:59). Mike Parker is still getting faster and managed 2nd in both the National Men's 3000 metres and 20,000 metre races. Rosie Robinson took out the Women's 3,000 and 20,000 metre titles and then turned around and helped as a track umpire. Natasha Murrihy achieved a good time of 54:14 for the Women's 19, 10,000 metres. The race of the weekend though was between Matthew Holcroft and Daniel Lord in the M19, 10,000 metres. Only 8 seconds separated them with Daniel getting home first in a time of 48:04. For all the results see the attached.

14th March - Matthew Holcroft has managed 2 PBs within 48 hours at the Australian Junior Championships, Olympic Park, Sydney. His first effort in the 5,000 metres gave him a PB by 1 minute 19 seconds and securued him a Silver medal in the U18 championship. See attached link  for more on this. Matthew then did the U20 10,000 metres on Saturday 12th March, he finished in a time of 49 minutes 34 seconds, which was a PB by 14 seconds. This gave him 5th Place. Full results from this event.

7th March - Quentin Rew walked a fantastic 20km at the Wellington Centre Champs at Trentham in February. He finished in a time of 1hour 28m 7 seconds! Looks like his hard work and time spent in Canberra are paying off. Alana Barber did a time of 1 hour 58m 3s as first woman. The results show finishing time and time per lap over a 1.25 km circuit. When you compare Quentin's lap times to everybody else, what stands out is the consistency per lap and the strong finish. Most of us tend to start with a hiss and a roar and then our times slow.

16th January - well done to Jonathon Lord, exceptional performance at the Colgate Games in Dunedin today, 16th January. Andrew Jackson (Auckland) won the North Island 2000 metres (B14) and also entered the South Island Colgate Games; normally you would expect that 5:35 per K would take 1st place, but not when Jonathon scorched home at around 4:45 per K to win in a time of 9:37.19. An extract of all the walks results can be viewed here.

10th January - North Island Colgate Games Walks results - 8th and 9th January 2011. There are some stand out performances by the Murrihys from Taumaranui (soon to be Wellington) and the Morattis of Inglewood in the girls results. The best male result is from Andrew Jackson (Race Walking Auckland). I have extracted the walks results which are just a click away.
19th December  - Daniel Lord and Rosie Robinson are the Otago 10km Road Walk Champions for 2010. Daniel did the 10km in 52m17s and Rosie did 52m23s. This was raced over the course to be used for Track and Field Champs at the end of March in Dunedin. For further results follow the link.
12th December - Courtney Ruske was first Female home in the NZ Secondary Schools Championships 2000 metre walk today in a very smart time of 9m52.69s. Second was Lucinda Shaw and third was Maggie Bradley. Matthew Holcroft is the 3000 metre Secondary Schools Champion winning by over 2 minutes from Jonathon Lord and a further minute back to Ben Meikle. Matthew's winning time was 13m18.43s. Full results of walks can be found here.
>6th December - Extract of Race Walking results from South Island Masters Track and Field Champs - 3rd to 5th December 2010 - Invercargill.
29th Nov - Racewalking Auckland 10,000metre track championships 2010 Yvette Williams track Pakuranga 28 November 2010. - Racing for the first time on Pakuranga’s new all weather surface at Lloyd Ellsmore Park, Racewalking Auckland members perservered  for 25 laps, with Mike Parker leading all the way to win by an almost 4 minute margin. In second place was David Sim, with the elder of the two Jackson brothers, Paul, finishing in third. The women’s championship was taken out by Shirley Barber. A tight tactical contest between Shirley and Andrew Jackson, saw Shirley lead to the 8km before Andrew pulled away over the final 5 laps. Full results here. Individual lap times can be accessed here.

25th Nov - Results from Race Walking Auckland's Creamer-Wilson One mile - Auckland Domain 21st Nov 2010.

23rd Nov - Extract of the Race Walking results from the North Island Masters Track and Field Championships from Inglewood - held on the 19th to 21st Nov. Many thanks to the walkers who made the effort to come from Wellington, Manawatu and Waikato. 16 walkers in the 3,000 metres and 11 in the 10K road walk (2 Wellington and 9 Taranaki). In the 3,000 metres there were 4DQs and 1 DNF. The 10K had 2 Dqs and 1 DNF. Judging was very consistent, but with strict IAAF rules there will always prove to be lots of DQs in the 60 plus age group, many are no longer able to lock.

7th Nov - Congratulations to Graeme Jones (Napier) and Vanessa Lowl (Taranaki) who were first male and female home in the Napier half marathon on Sunday. Graeme walked away from the field only 2 weeks after walking an excellent 50km. He made it look easy winning in a time of 1:50:30. Vanessa Lowl worked hard to win the women's race, but was never troubled, she came home in a time of 2:10:26. Peter Zwart (Manawatu), who was first Master in the 50km championship, had to work hard  for 2nd place, to beat new comer Harry Terwiel (Taranaki). Peter finished in a time of 2:06:29 and Harry, who has only been walking since January, had a time of 2:08:04. Robyn Wolfsbauer has previously been the Race Organiser, but got this year off for good behaviour and walked well for 2nd in a time of 2:16:03. Denise Stewart-Jacks (Taranaki) was 3rd woman home in a time of 2:21:43. This was a well organised event and walkers were kept under control by the watchful eye of Joff Hulbert. The last 4 or 5K were hard work into the wind, but walkers were relieved that conditions were much better than the previous day. Full results and photographs can be found here.

Quentin Rew and Rosie Robinson are the 2010 Long Distance Champions over 50km and 15km respectively. Rosie is also the Road Champion over 10km along with Mike Parker the Senior Men's Road Race champion over 10km. Quentin turned in a great performance to retain his 50km Championship title at Whakatu, Hastings, taking 27 minutes off his PB winning in a time of 4:25:19. Rosie became the Senior Woman's champion in both events at just 19 years of age. Alana Barber took second place in both the Senior Woman's Long Distance and Road Championships. Senior Men's Road Champion over 10km is Mike Parker. In a welcome return to Race Walking, Graeme Jones was a very creditable second in the 50km, only 5 minutes adrift. The 50km was very keenly contested between Quentin and Graeme. Quentin started out at 5 minutes per K for the first 10 or 11K, whereas Graeme started averaging around 5:20 for the first 10K. The lead then settled to about 350 metres. For lap after lap the distance never changed much. This went on for 30 plus laps; it became a case of who was going to blink first. This was Graeme in about the 43rd km. He gradually slowed and Quentin opened the gap and almost lapped Graeme, to his credit though Graeme managed to find enough strength to hold out. Thanks for putting on a great race for everybody else. A fitting finale to bring down the curtain on racing at Whakatu. The first race here had also been memorable as Sargy qualified for the Commonwealth Games in 2005 (originally raced over a 2K circuit). In the other match of the day, we had the young gun (Mathew Holcroft) and the wily master (Mike Parker) going toe to toe. Although in different races, neither was going to give an inch as they went round virtually side by side. Mathew managed to get a few seconds ahead on the 8th lap and try as he might, Mike could not pull him in again. Mathew finished just 5 seconds ahead of Mike in 50:01 for the 10km M16 Long distance championship. Mathew also took out the Road Championship M16 over 5km in a time of 25:20 - so excellent negative splits. For Road Champs results click here. For Long Distance results click here and the non championship results are here.

19th Oct - Final results of road relay (2nd Oct) have been sorted at last. See attached for details. For a Taranaki flavoured report follow the link.

18th Oct - Race Walking Auckland held their 5000m Championship at Mount Smart Stadium on the 10th Oct. Titles went to Mike Parker - SM - 24m; Brooke Cowsill - SW - 28m2s; Andrew Jackson - JM - 33m10s and Maggie Bradley - JW - 29m36s. Full Results here.

9th October - the women's 20km Race Walking - Commonwealth Games Championships was a very different race to the men's one. This was a commanding performance by Jo Jackson of England. She came into the event as favourite and didn't disappoint. It was a gun to tape win by 2 minutes 30 seconds. Jo trained in Australia for a time about 2 years ago and has certainly improved extremely well for the last 2 years. Look out for her at the Olympics in 2 years in London if this progress continues. Australian dominance of women's walking at the Commonwealth Games has been broken at last, but only just with Claire Tallent coming home for a very deserved silver medal. What a great moment that was to see Mr and Mrs. Tallent embracing at the end of her race. Grace Wanjiru Njue of Kenya was absolutely jubilant to win a Bronze in Kenya's second only medal in Race Walking at the Commonwealth Games. The winning time of 1:34:22 was another Games record. Again very few red cards. Wasn't it amazing to see Lisa Kehler at 43 years old come home in 4th place at her 5th Commonwealth Games. Full results are here. Individual lap times here.

9th October - talent certainly rose to the top today in the 20km Race Walking Championships at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Jared Tallent and Luke Adams from Australia didn't give an inch in their epic tussle today. Luke had led for K after K with Jared and Harminder Singh sitting comfotably behind in 2nd and 3rd place. At about 14km, Jared Tallent put the pressure on and they dropped Singh. At the 18km drinks, Tallent took a bit of time and Adams once again took the lead. With about 1km to go it looked as though Adams was making a bit of a break but then seemed to almost trip over his own shoe. This upset his rhthym for 500 or 600 metres and Tallent pounced. He surged into a commanding lead, which Adams could never quite claw back. This was a fantastic 1, 2 for Australia with Singh taking bronze for India, breaking his PB by a long way. The winning time of 1:22:18 was a Games Record. The conditions looked ideal, the course was great for Television and thankfully the Commentators were pretty good. Very few red cards were issued. Full results here. Individual lap times here.

23rd Aug - Mark Gray and Kelly Mabbett are the Waikato/BOP 10km Road Champions for 2010. This event was raced in appallingly wet conditions on Saturday 21st Aug. Mark did 56m51s and Kelly 57m54s.
