The first Athletics Wellington 20 km Road Race Walking Championship for many years was held on Sunday 29th September in Upper Hutt.  The course was the one used for the Wellington Scottish Ekiden Relay and which may be used for the Athletics NZ championships in March 2014.
Seven walkers started and after a fast start by John Leonard Terri Grimmett and Sue Hoskin pulled away from the rest.  Terri gradually opened a lead on Sue and finished well in 2:09.54 to Sue’s 2:12.34 and new senior man of Scottish Sean Lake third in 2:16.17.  Fraser Samson was the only starter in the Junior 10 km and he walked steadily to finish in 64:23.  Other walkers competed over non-championship distances and sixteen walkers in total faced the judges who were led by Peter Wrigley. Results are here.
8th Sept -
PALMERSTON NORTH
One Hour Walk, Manawatu Community Athletic Track – 8 September 2013
Ten walkers took to the track to determine what distance they could cover in an hour. In what is believed to be a first, all competitors were successful in covering sufficient distance to qualify for one of the Race Walk New Zealand Standard Awards. These are international based standards and factor in the athletes age and sex.
Gold awards were achieved by Terri Grimmett who covered 9560m, Sue Hoskin covering 9405m, Marlene White 8992m and Daphne Jones 8201m. Mike Morrissey covered the greatest distance of 11,847m but this only earned him a silver award along with Barbara Morrison. Recipients of the bronze awards were Tony Burrell 9481m, Serena Coombes 9227m, Helen Baverstock 8496m and Anne Fraser 8202m.
In conjunction with the hour walk a 10,000m race was held and Mike Morrissey complete this distance in a Masters M40 national record time of 50:19.31 Terri Grimmett was second in 1:02:56 with Tony Burrell finishing in 1:3:13.41. He was followed by Sue Hoskin home in 1: 3:55.02 with Marlene White also completing the additional distance clocking 1:07:03.97.
31st Aug - Congratulations to all those who raced in Dunedin in the Athletics New Zealand Road Champs; a long way to travel for many so thank you for showing the commitment. Well done to Mike Morresey in winning your first National title and going under 50 minutes for the first time. Well done to Jonathon Lord - a very slick 22m21s. What great races we have in store for us in the next few years in the Women's section. We of course have Rozie and now Kate on the comeback trail. Those of you who have watched Kate Newitt over the years realise what a prospect she is for the future of Race Walking - her technique is so graceful; hope that 50 minutes is not far away. Coming up fast (the great unknown - my words - as she reminds me) is Julie Edmunds from Dunedin who did a very big PB in taking out the Masters in a fast 55m26s. Throw Courtney into the mix with her 24m23s 5K and we have the recipe for some very competitive racing. The results of the walking from Saturday are here.
17th Aug - Peter Baillie and Terri Grimmett are the Wellington Road Walk Champions for 2013. See attached.

It should make for good battles at Dunedin in 2 weeks time - the battle of the 2 Mikes and then Kate Newitt, Rozie Robinson and Brooke Cowsill will also be an interesting match up.
17th Aug - Kate Newitt was a clear winner in the Senior Women's Canterbury Road Walks Championship in 53m59s. Excellent performances over 5K by Courtney Ruske in 24m39s and Jonathon Lord i 23m55s. 15th June - The Wellington Centre 5 and 10km races were held on Saturday at Upper Hutt as reported by David Lonsdale. Results.
The conditions were perfect in Upper Hutt on a course similar to the Ekiden one.  A light frost until 9.30 am and at the 10 am start time it was just comfortable with no wind at all.  Stuart Hood took an early lead but after three cautions and one red card he slowed slightly and Peter Baillie slowly caught him. Stuart’s time of 55:49 was a PB. Peter Baillie [56:09] is slowly getting back to his pre-injury form.
Terri Grimmett also got two cautions and one red card but generally walked a very focussed race to a PB of 61:11 just off Sue Hoskin’s age group record.  John Leonard also set a PB of 62:53.
All starters A & B grades were judged (by 2 A grades and 2 C Grades) and seven were DQ’d but all were allowed to finish after removing their front numbers

Quentin Rew clipped four seconds off Craig Barrett’s national 20km road walking record in winning the German championship race in 1h 22m 16s. 27th April -  Hagley Relays (from John Henderson)
On Sat 27 April one race walk team entered the Hagley relays which is a team of 3 doing  one lap each of 4k around the perimeter of Hagley Park. It is not a good race walk course but is fun and good to have a team competing in a relay. They were pulled along by the running teams also competing and finished 19min ahead of the next power walking team.
