Afternoon Sailing
What its about:
For those looking for something more competitive, HBC offers competitive afternoon racing for everyone! Racing is held Saturday afternoons from the club, with a range of boats and sailors taking part. You can race your own boat, sail with someone else, or come down and see what it's all about. Club racing is a great way to get some time on the water, improve your sailing, and have a bit of friendly competition. You don't need to be an expert - we'll have people around to help you get set up and explain how everything works. All experience levels are welcome.
How it works:
Saturday afternoon racing at Heretaunga Boating Club is generally split into four series: Handicap Series (1,2 and 3) and Championship Series.
The Championship Series uses the larger course, with boats sailing the full length around the regular triangle course. The Handicap Series uses a shorter course, with a separate, shorter mark. This acts as the handicap, allowing different skill levels to race over different distances while still sailing in the same fleet. Courses can be seen below.
You can sail pretty much any dinghy in club racing. We regularly have fleets including Lasers, Starlings, Sunbursts and RS Fevas, as well as other boats that occasionally join the racing. We will handicap it accordingly to give everyone a fair shot at victory! There isn't necessarily a requirement to sail in a dedicated class fleet either. If you're sailing a boat that doesn't have enough entries for its own fleet, you can still take part in the racing in the open fleet.
