NEW MEMBERS & VISITORS – WELCOME
The South Canterbury Hunt Inc. warmly welcomes new members, visiting riders, and supporters who enjoy riding in open country and participating in traditional harrier hunting.
Founded in 1882, the South Canterbury Hunt is one of New Zealand’s longest-established hunts. We are privileged to hunt across South and Mid Canterbury, from the Ashburton River in the north, to the Pareora River in the south, and inland to the Mackenzie Basin.
We operate entirely over privately owned farmland and are extremely grateful to the landowners who generously allow us access.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Hunts (or “meets”) are held once or twice weekly
The season runs from March to mid-July
We maintain a pack of approximately 35 harrier hounds
On hunt days, riders gather with their horses at a host property and ride across country under the direction of the Masters, following the Huntsman and hounds in pursuit of a hare.
Riders may choose their own pace within the field and are encouraged to ride within their ability.
VISITORS – IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Visiting riders are very welcome, but must:
Obtain permission from the Master prior to hunt day
Introduce themselves to the Master on arrival
Locate the Field Secretary to pay the required capping fee (if not already paid online)
Visitors are expected to be familiar with basic hunting etiquette and to ride considerately at all times.
RIDING & FENCES
Some country may be prepared beforehand with:
Riders may also choose to jump unprepared wire fences (full wire) at their own discretion and judgment. Each rider is responsible for assessing their horse’s ability and their own experience.
IS HUNTING RIGHT FOR ME?
Hunting may suit you if you:
Enjoy riding in open country
Are comfortable riding in a group environment
Respect landowners, stock, hounds, and fellow riders
Are happy to follow instructions from the Masters and officials
You do not need to jump fences to enjoy hunting — many riders choose to go around or ride in the slower field. Support and guidance are always available for newcomers.
ETIQUETTE
Hunting relies on courtesy, tradition, and respect. All riders are expected to:
Follow instructions from the Masters, Field Secretary, and Whips
Give way to hounds at all times
Ride thoughtfully around stock, crops, and other riders
Help maintain positive relationships with landowners
Please see the “Hunting Etiquette” tab for more detailed guidance.
AFTER THE HUNT
At the conclusion of the hunt, once horses are covered, fed, and watered, riders traditionally gather to share a “breakfast” (afternoon tea).
This is an important part of the day — a chance to socialise, reflect on the hunt, and thank our generous landowners.
NON-RIDING SUPPORTERS
Non-riding members, followers, and supporters are an important part of the Hunt community. Whether helping behind the scenes, supporting events, or joining us socially, all are welcome.
Interested in joining us or visiting for a hunt day?
Please contact the Master prior to hunt day — we’re happy to answer questions and help you get started.
