Seventh round 27th November 2010/11 - Swannanoa vs Scargill at Swannanoa
Saturday 27 November was a glorious day, with a bright summer sun shining on the Swannanoa oval.
Captain Osborne lost the toss (again) and the Scargill skipper sent Swannanoa into the scorching field.
In just the second over of the innings, and after being struck soundly through cover for a four off his first ball, Adonis struck a blow of his own removing the dangerous Mathenson with a sensational stunner that seamed in to strike the stumps. A comprehensive dismissal that lifted the Noa side.
Ryan, H then contributed two wickets one a juggling save taken by Osborne at mid-off and the other a sensational, single handed snatch at slip by Jason Findlays left hand to see Scargill struggling at 15 for 3 after seven overs.
Opener Beil and Scargill skipper Glasson then established a solid partnership, seeing the visitors through to 63 before Adonis held the chance to reward some tight spin bowling from ODonnell, M.
From 63 for 4 at the halfway point drinks, Swannanoa began to wilt a little in the heat. A quick-fire 43 from the strongly built Hugo, who built another enviable partnership with the reliable Beil, ended sensationally when Stalker removed the dangerman by completing the first of two stunning catches. Heffernan too reaffirmed his reliable hands and calm head and is now established as a specialist long-on boundary rider with another excellent take of a skier (to back up a similar take from the previous Saturday).
But for each screamer taken, there also seemed to be a dolly dropped and the Swannanoa 2nds let a handful of simple chances slip through their fingers. Extras too were a problem with 31 byes, leg byes, wides and no-balls being conceded ouch!
Beil carried his bat for the innings, ending 76no in a fine anchor role. 202 was the total, with Swannaonoa facing a stern challenge against a Scargill side that, first round, had rolled them for just 45.
Fulton T, showed some promise, but was cleaned out when the Swannanoa score stood at 8. Then came the partnership of the season thus far, with opener Adonis and skipper Osborne combining to tally 123 for the second wicket. Against a quality attack, Osborne played some magisterial shots of genuine class and authority, including a number of memorable boundaries that fair flew off his bat. Adonis was more circumspect, but also played with aplomb and confidence against the full-strength Scargill bowlers.
A notable feature of the partnership was the way it built its momentum over time. 65 for 1 at drinks (an almost identical run rate to Scargill, but with two more wickets in hand), Adonis and Osborne accelerated their scoring until the visitors began to show signs of discomfort it was game on!
When Osborne finally fell, bowled, after playing a rather tired shot, he had struck a season topping score for the Swannanoa 2nds of 70. More importantly, he had seen the Noa side through to 131 and within striking distance of the Scargill total. Distressed by his dismissal, Osborne could not immediately see the value of his knock, which it should be noted was the fifth time in six innings he has top-scored for the Swannanoa 2nds this season.
Under pressure to score quickly (the asking rate was now approximately seven an over), Findlay, newcomer John Elkins (welcome to the Noa), wicket keeper Hoare, and Stalker, all contributed some quick runs (with the former striking a cleanly hit six) in partnership with Adonis.
Amidst the growing tension (and sense of self-belief from the Noa camp), Adonis was dismissed just two runs short of what would have been a fine half century. He had played a vital anchor role in his finest knock yet for Swannanoa
But
Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Adonis departure brought ODonnell, M to the crease with the score at 168 for 5, and 35 still required for victory). There were no more than four overs remaining. In a dazzling display, ODonnell immediately found the middle of the bat, dashing 29 from an estimated 15 deliveries (including two 4s and a sweetly timed 6). With two required from the last two balls, ODonnell suddenly conceded a dot, but this temporary heart-stopper was not enough to dismay Swannanoas latest hero, as he calmly dispatched the last ball of the innings for a couple, and a famous victory for the mighty Noa against a formidable and honourable opponent.
The cheers resonated around the oval as the home side celebrated its phenomenal win it had been a team victory, with all contributing, but the names of Osborne, Adonis, and ODonnell, M, did deservedly shine a little brighter than most in this great chapter of the Swannanoa story.
Scargill 202/8 (M Beil 76no, Hugo 43; Ryan, H 2 for 10 off 8 overs, Adonis 2 for 38 off 8 overs, and Stalker 2 for 45 off 7 overs) lost to Swannanoa 203/7 (Osborne 70, Adonis 48, ODonnell, M 29no; Smity, 2 for 41 off seven overs).
Fifth round 6th November 2010/11 - Swannanoa vs Ohoka at Swannanoa
1st INNINGS [OHOKA 148 all out] With torrential rain coming down in Christchurch at 11:30am some members of the team were suprised the match was still on. However, they should have trusted the 'Noa to be playable in virtually any conditions and we had 10 there for the slightly delayed start (J Findlay had deceased stock to deal with). The captain and all other Swannanoa players who had been fortunate enough to know and play with Chris Marsh ("Marshy") wore black arm bands for this match.
After winning the toss Ohoka elected to bat so that only 4 of them had to stand out in the Antarctic winds at any given time. Swannanoa responded well, despite only having 10 in the field for a long period, and managed to keep Ohoka's run rate realistic. There was a noticable lift in the field from the previous week as all were determined to erase memories of the Amberley game. Heffernan (6-0-10-1) and Adonis (8-1-28-1) bowled tightly from the outset. After the fall of an initial wicket, the Ohoka batsmen looked to be settling again when captain Osbourne made the startling decision to bring Woodsy on at 1st change. This proved to be a genius move as Woodsy quickly took 3 wickets, including an inspired catch at semi-silly mid-off by Mark O'Donnell. This meant Ohoka went into the drinks break with less than 100 posted and 5 back in the hutch. The team weren't counting their chickens regarding the 2nd 20 overs, but were determined not to let Ohoka get away to a big total.
Andy Cherry looked all class as he marshalled the mid-lower order for Ohoka and it did look dangerous for a while, but some crazy running led to a couple of run-outs and Cherry began to run out of support. Hamish Anderson (4-0-14-1) came on for his first spell for the 2nd's today and surprised himself and one of Ohoka's better batmen with a superb swinging delivery for a clean bowled in his first over! Richard Stalker (7-1-30-1) put in another solid performance with the ball. Another new bowler for the 2nd's was Richard Bruce (4-024-1) who showed great promise and shocked the Ohoka side by being last change and yet clearly our fastest bowler. Look forward to more from bowlers like Richard, Lindon and Hamish in the future.
2nd INNINGS [Swannanoa 120 all out (in the 35th)] After the previous rounds it was a clear priority NOT to lose 3-5 wickets within the first 10 overs this time. The 'Noa felt confident that with a solid start Ohoka could be reeled in. Another new opening combination was tried and complied with the instruction not to lose a wicket at any price superbly for 12 overs! Well done to Hamish (12) and Lindon (15) for showing some grit against the Ohoka opening bowlers. Ohoka seemed to work out what was going on and removed Needham & Cherry from the attack after 8 overs. A slow initial scoring rate put some pressure on the batsmen to lift the rate and in the end the 'Noa was to fall short by a mere 28 runs, with 5-6 overs to spare. This showed that the firepower was there down the order and the tactic to start solidly then have a go was a sound one by captain Osbourne, who thrashed a quick-fire 33 at one point to get things back on track. Richard Bruce (29*) looked confident of hauling Ohoka in and was unfortunate to run out of partners at the end. All in all, a much much improved effort by the 2nd's.
Fourth round 30th October 2010/11 - Swannanoa vs Amberley at Amberley
Still waiting for report.
Third round 23rd October 2010/11 - Swannanoa vs Sefton at Sefton
On a beautiful day set for cricket, this game was a great improvement on the first, but unfortunately a couple of areas where the 'foot was taken off' let this game slip away.
Playing on one of the nicer ovals going, and a nicely presented artificial pitch, we bowled first with tried and true Phil and Hayden and immediately had a breakthrough when Hayden cleaned bowled an opener. However, wickets after this were hard to come by, but tight bowling all round kept the run rate low and at drinks Sefton sat at 80ish for 2, as like last week. After drinks they attempted to pick up the pace and even with a few boundaries, they lost some wickets, and but for some bludgeoning in the tail and wayward bowling (24 wides bowled!) what should have been a total of sub-150 reached 178 which was a shame as the ground fielding and catching was of a very high standard, and Shaun behind the stumps showed what a great find he was to the team. Richard Stalker again impressed bowling straight through with variation and line and length, and Jason Findlay snapped up a couple of wickets and had some words to say about wide calling...even so, 180 was a big chase, but not impossible.
Heffernan 8 overs, 1 maiden, 1 wkt for 28 runs Ryan 8-2-2 for 33 Tappen 7-0-1 for 40 (congrats on first wicket, shame about the wides) Stalker 8-0-1 for 27 Aussie (note spelling scorers) 5-0-0 for 22 Findlay 4-0-2 for 22
Catches to Osborne, Findlay, Zinny, Carl and Shaun (real team member, gave up a fishing trip to help out the boys!).
In batting, Pete and Shaun took the task and were met by some lively bowling - like last week, the bowlers niggled on a line and length, with some pace, and soon had some swing going to. A straight one outside off caught Pete's edge and he was away. Tim's cut to the boundary looked promising, but was undone by an in swinging Yorker, and then a flurry of wickets saw the team reeling at 6-33 and another rout looked on. But at one end through all of this was Hayden, plugging away, and he had able support from the indoorers - Carl and Richard and Ryan put on 85 between them, and with a cameo at the end from Jed and Phil (10 and 21 off 7) the team got to within 25 runs of the target - flattered somewhat when Sefton had to lose two players.

Frank Spencer Moment - fine to be paid next week Aussie, after being viciously attacked in the bushes by bugs and trees looking for the ball.
No other fines!!!!
So some positives, and again some work to do. Amberley next week who last week knocked over Sefton by three...so makes for interesting play.
Please note, fines from last week were not paid. Failure to do so within two weeks of a game will incur penalties of 50% of original fine.
Second round 16th October 2010/11 - Swannanoa vs Scargill at Scargill
With the fog blanketing CHCH and the lower Waimak, it felt like we were going to have another wash out, but reaching Amberley it was clear that we were going to have a stunner in the sunshine, and hot it proved to be!
Scargill in the past has been a beaut little ground, however, much to the embarrassment of the locals, it hadn't been well prepared, and it actually looked like the pitch had only been mown on our arrival and due to this, the co-captains made a call to bowl first in the hope of knocking over the opposition and chasing a small target.
The bowling stocks looked great, and both Phil Heffernan and Hayden Ryan got great pace and movement in their opening spells, but the batsmen looked strong but didnt score quickly. 1 wicket fell to Hayden, well taken by new keeper Shaun. As the sun got hotter, the team toiled under solid defence, and mixing up the bowling kept things interesting, however Scargill got through to 81 for 2 at drinks, and it looked like they could move on from there.
But after drinks, Noa struck back, and how! A new find in Richard Stalker (yes, that is his name!) bowled through in tandem with Woodsie and the two of them ripped into Scargill taking six wickets between them, and with Phil chipping in to knock over the tail and Scargill were out for 108 which was a great effort. Fielding was sublime, Jeds ground fielding and two catches up there with Shauns top notch keeping. A couple of spills were regrettable but expected early in the season, and Rhys comic relief was welcomed.
It is often clichéd in rugby that it is a game of two halves neer a truer word spoken in this game. The total seemed very gettable, and everyone knew what was expected of them. It can be argued that with so many new untested players that uncertainty would create some nervous moments, there was certainly enough batting expertise to get us out of trouble and win the game for us, but Scargill bowled and fielded superbly, however were never entirely threatening they didnt need to be, we imploded! Rash shots cost Noa, and within 20 overs it came to a very sorry end when Jed was bowled for 1. Tim batted quite well watching wickets tumble quicker than a Black Caps opening order, but one man cannot carry the team and when he went for 23 so did our chances.
A very disappointing effort considering the great work in the field, but no doubt will steel some peoples resolves for redemption next week against Sefton. It is interesting to note, there were 6 LBWs given in this game
