Round 13 - 12th February - Swannanoa 3RD 11 vs Kaiapoi Brown, Kaiapoi

The day was dry and windy.  I couldn’t tell you who won the toss, but we bowled first.  Lang was asked to open up downwind with a new cherry, and told by captain Olsen to “tickle them up”.  Lang with fellow opener Eddie.T bowled well, and it became quite apparent that we wouldn’t be chasing many.  It was fair to say that the pitch was playing very tough - seaming profusely, bouncing erratically and turning square.  Poppa Adonis took a screamer of a first slip catch off a rising ball from Lang to get rid of one opener – we may have found a real quality slipper as he followed it up later with another blinder off Olsen.  The second round of bowlers bowled well, Matt McGuinness bowling some sharp lefties off about 30 paces, and Poppa Adonis with some exceptionally tight right hand orthodox.  McGuiness, after bowling a couple of heat seakers, and fearing an incident was pulled by Olsen, replaced with himself.  Olsen turned back the years, becoming near unplayable on the pitch, his figures showing this.  Matt “Shane Warne without the bleach and Liz Hurley” McNabb bamboozled them from the other end, taking 4 wickets – albeit with a couple of sneaky ones caught well by McGuiness at leg slip.  Mike Martin replaced Olsen, and like the others was near unplayable.  One of the best all round bowling performances by the 3rd for a while (maybe helped by a real bowlers wicket).

Kaiapoi 82 all out off 37.3 overs

Swannanoa’s time to bat, and the discussion at the turn was that it wasn’t going to be easy – the feeling being that 100 would have been a real stretch.  The usual Lang/Drake partnership was not available due to Drakey fixing chimneys or something, so a totally new combo of Pope and Findlay minor strode out.  They looked in a hurry, and unfortunately it wasn’t long before Pope was back in the pavilion.  Lang’s turn at bat and a lot of defensive play ensued from his end.  Findley came and went for a breezy 24, then a mini collapse occurred with Swannanoa going from 43 for 1, to 55 for 4.  At this stage the opposition were getting confident of staging a surprise win, an 18 run partnership between Lang and Olsen steadied things, and on the departure of Olsen, Woodie the new keeper came in to help clean up the rest of the required runs.

A good game played in good spirits (except when one of the bowlers accused Popey of not watching the play when he was umpiring).  Great fun for the bowlers, and a real challenge for the batters.  It does confirm though you can’t beat a good artificial pitch like at the Noa.

Round 12 - 5th February - Swannanoa 3RD 11 vs NCCA SS, Dudley Park

Played a bunch of school boy smart arses who couldn't field, slogged, and bowled 48 extras.  Too lippy - they should shut up and play the game.

We got 198, they got about 149 all out in 27 overs.  We won.  Back to school boys.

Round 11 - 29th January - Swannanoa 3RD 11 vs Ohoka, Swannanoa

The day dawned fine enough but with rain about it wasn’t certain whether we’d get a start on time. However, with the rain hitting Ohoka village but not making it to Swannanoa the game started on time. Ohoka were to bat first with Geoff and Mike H opening up the bowling. Geoff managed to snare one of their openers early for 2, but from there the Ohoka boys managed to score quite well without actually ever dominating. Rusty Drake came up to bowl and while providing chances, no one from The Noa was able to hold onto a catch. Ohoka moved along nicely with Hiatt and Sidey scoring freely and not looking to give away their wickets until Mike M was able to bowl Sidey for 40. From there a procession of wickets fell with 2 superb stumpings from Scotty (One given, one not). Once the run makers were removed we were able to pick up regular wickets with Rusty picking up 3 and a fine run out saw the end of Enersen. A rear guard action was used by Ohoka with Needham (The Ginger Ninja) knocking a quick fire 28 before Tim F was able to buy the final wicket with some lolly’s pitching half way down the track. A superb boundary catch from Nathan saw the end of the ginger ninja and Ohoka were all out for 199. A good score that we would have to work hard at to come away with a win.
The standard opening partnership of Lang and Drake were sent out and both openers did their job well with a 96 run opening stand. They kept pace with the required run rate all the way through only falling slightly behind when the ginger ninja had the ball and was sending down the odd thunderbolt. After they both fell within 4 runs of each other, Lance Ryan then stepped up to the plate and along with Derek Scott pushed things through to 162 for 3 when Scotty fell to a dubious caught behind for 22. Lance carried on with Tim Fulton to get within 16 runs of victory before Lance fell for a very well compiled 46 (7 x 4’s). Mike M came and went cheaply before Geoff Olsen strode to the crease and wasn’t about to muck around hitting the nine runs required with 4 overs to spare.
All in all a well constructed run chase. Bring on the school boys next week.

Round 10 - 18th December - Swannanoa 3RD 11 vs Southbrook, Swannanoa

On Friday night the weather forecasters had called for rain, so it was wiht some surprise that we turned up to the 'Noa in 34 degree heat. It got even hotter as the afternoon progressed, with the temperature varying between 34 and 36 right up until after 6pm.

Swannanoa again won the toss and decided to bat, figuring that 40 overs in the sapping heat would tire out the Southbrook boys.  However, after a punishing start from Drake and Lang of 69/0 after the first 10 overs, it was the batsmen who were tiring.

Scoring slowed but remained steady, with Nathan surviving an extremely confident run-out shout after a quick single, until at 107/0 in the 20th over he succumbed to some very sharp fielding, unfortunately just two runs short of what would have been a well-earned half century. Derek Scott came out at number 3 but it was Rusty who took all the strike for the next four overs, belting several boundaries and a six.

A double strike from Southbrook , with Scotty and then Rusty both caught in quick succession, Rusty walking off with a superb score of 79 in the conditions. It was 3/132 after 24 overs, with two fresh batsmen at the crease: the youngster Matt O'Rourke, and Geoff Olsen.

O'Rourke played a sound innings with several nice strokes, despite a large amount of heckling from the fielders. Consecutive steady partnerships of 30-odd followed, taking the team to 184/5 after 36 overs.  Rhys Kinder and Eddie Tirikatene did not trouble the scorers, but a flashy finish from Mike Martin (inclouding three fours and a six from consecutive balls faced), raced the side past the goal of 200, and in fact up to 210/8 in the 39th over when Martin finally missed one and had his castle rattled.

A solid knock from Mike Hamilton, including a boundary, got us up to 217, including a stolen single off the final ball when the ball was played aerially to the slips and only partially stopped. The Southbrook boys were understandably very relieved to get to the tap and hose themselves down after 40 overs under the hot sun.

After the break, Swannanoa came out to field, opening up with slow bowling from both ends. Although McNabb took no wickets, the bowling was fairly tight from both ends, and Eddie knocked off the first four of the Southbrook batsmen, ending up with figures of 27/4 from his eight overs.

Tim Parrot and Mike Hamilton picked up where they left off, taking one wicket each in their six-over spells. With the Southbrook total at 129/6 after 28 overs, it was just a matter of time until the game was over, but we were all hoping that we could crack into the cold ones sooner rather than later (none more than myself, who ran into some severe dehydration problems).

Fortunately, a tidy final spell from Geoff (17/1 from 4 overs) and Russell (10/2 from 3 overs) wrapped up the tail and we all hurried off the park. A stirling effort from Drake on the hot day, who batted for 20 overs, umpired, and bowled, all the while astutely captaining the field.

Round 9 - 11th December - Swannanoa 3RD 11 vs Kaiapoi, Swannanoa

The home side won the toss. Having been advised by M. Woods that this Kaiapoi team was even weaker than the one we had walloped earlier in the competition, the decision was made to bat first in order to prolong the match beyond 3pm.

Perhaps unwilling to deal with the clamour of batsmen eager to get out and notch up a ton, captain Pope decided to draw the batting order out of a hat (literally).

However, a few overs into the innings of selected openers Derek Scott and Andy Pope, it became clear that the earlier complacency was unwarranted, as Harry sent down several accurate overs (eventually ending with 14-0 from his 8 overs on othe trot). Tight bowling from both ends meant that even though the first wicket did not fall until the 10th over, the score was only 29/1 at the time, and there was some trepidation in the clubhouse with Matt McNabb down at #3.

Scott looked to be holding the ship together until being trapped leg before by Arps for 28. That brought the familiar partnership of Russell Drake and Nathan Lang to the crease, but they were unable to score freely against more tight bowling and with Lang falling for 10, the score was at 74/4 after 22 overs.

With Geoff Olsen coming out to bat and the Kaiapoi 12th man coming in to bowl, we were able to break the shackles somewhat, and despite Drake smacking the ball straight to a fielder, Olsen and Mike Martin put on a quick 40.

The game swung again after Olsen's departure in the 32nd over, with Martin being "Ryan'd" and Tim Green barely troubling the scorers, leaving the total at 151/8 in the 35th over.

Unfortunately for Kaiapoi, this brought Mark Sincock to the crease who was able to score freely, including several pulls through midwicket . With Lance Ryan also firing at the other end, 40 runs came in just 4 overs. Sincock had the castle rattled in the penultimate over, but Eddie Tirikatene was able to come out and nudge the ball around to bring the total past the 200 mark in the last over.

-

After a dismal afternoon tea fare, Swannanoa took to the field, with Olsen and Drake opening up. The bowling was right on target, with Olsen's first two overs producing 4 runs for 3 wickets, and Drake sending down two maidens.

The Kaiapoi partnership of Harry and Glasson hunkered down and although they kept their wickets intact, also did not score many runs, and Drake eventually broke through in the 12th over, leaving  the total at 33/4.

Lang and McNabb were brought on to bowl next, however neither was able to take a wicket and Kaiapoi's #5 Gray kept the scoreboard ticking over.

The next bowling partnership of Sincock and Tirikatene was much more effective , with Sincock taking 2 for 11 in his first six overs, and Tirikatene also taking two wickets even though he went for a few.

The game seemed in the bag with Kaiapoi reduced to 133/8 after 32 overs. They produced a small rearguard action with Gunn and Arps carting Eddie and Martin around. Olsen was brought back on in the 37th over and picked up the last two wickets for a well-deserved five-for, with Kaiapoi falling 35 runs short in the 39th over.

Round 8 - 4th December - Swannanoa 3RD 11 vs Woodend , Woodend

Swannanoa met Woodend at the Woodend Domain with Swannanoa winning the toss and electing to bat.

Most players self-destructed to the early tame Woodend attack with only Derek Scott applying himself with a well-compiled 62.  A good 7th wicket partnership of 50 between Stu Cousins, 28 NO and Mike Hamilton saw Swannanoa home to 206 for 6.

Woodend limped to 137 with only a player named “Squeak” scoring an entertaining 50, offering any resistance.  Matt McNabb 2/30, Geoff Olsen 2/18 and newcomer Richard Campion 2/21 were the chief destroyers.

Perhaps the highlight of the day was the four catches taken by Nathan Lang at mid wicket which made sure Woodend were to run second.

Round 7 - 27th November - Swannanoa 3RD 11 vs Southbrook , Southbrook

For a change the weather was hot and clear. The track looked liked it had been mown out of the rough of a golf course or the backyard. The Noa team turned up two short, with no gear or ball. Eddie eventually arrived late, and Steve Cousins was dug out of the garden by Derek. Russell kindly donated a ball to be used.

Geoff went out to toss and Southbrook ended up batting. Mike and Geoff opened up, with Geoff doing the opening damage by taking 3 wickets. Russell’s donated ball ended up in the boundary creek and disappearing. Aussie charged in with his shoes on, and ended up playing the rest of the game in bare feet. Southbrook donated a ball which ended up bouncing even less than the original ball.

At this point Matt and Russell were introduced, with Matt extracting considerable turn. His first very short ball ended up being hit straight to Nathan in the covers. His first full toss ended up in Rhys hands at backward square leg. Then for the second week in a row a Noa bowler ended up on a hat trick, with Matt taking two in two balls, but just missing the stumps with the hat trick ball. Russell chimed in with 2 wickets, leaving Nathan to take the last wicket. Southbrook all out for 38.

After a quick tea break, Eddie and Rhys opened up. Rhys missed the first swing at the ball, and the second one which ended up hitting the stumps – Noa 1 for 1. Enter Steve who proceeded to hit straight, but leave Eddie struggling for oxygen running between the wickets. A direct hit had Eddie short of his ground on another single. Noa 2 for 13. Enter Derek to partner Steve, but shortly after Steve was caught. Noa 3 for 16. Aussie was moved up the order to join Derek, and proceed to play extremely cautiously, while Derek scored the runs. Aussie was given out LBW to a bowler bowling around the wicket. Noa 4 for 24. Mike came in to join Derek. Derek took 14 of the next over and the scores were tied. The Southbrook captain threw the ball to Prowler (Ian to his friends), who then marked out his run, and then ran in to bowl while Mike was looking round the field . He went back to his mark and bowled a wide down the legside – not called by the umpire. Next ball was wide outside the off – not called by the umpire. Next ball bounced twice before being defended by Mike – not called by the umpire. Prowler then disappear towards South Belt Rd, Mike asked where he was going to the close in fielders, who then rolled around with laughter. He came steaming in and was dispatched through the covers for a boundary – game over.

Round 6 - 20th November - Swannanoa 3RD 11 vs Kaiapoi B, Oxford

MATCH REPORT 3RD GRADE
Swannanoa - Kaiapoi at Swannanoa, 20 Nov 2010
------------------------------------------------

Despite light rain in both Kaiapoi and Rangiora, the 'Noa ground was dry, albeit dark and gloomy, and the game proceeded despite the efforts of McNabb's wife who had taken the car out assuming that the game would be cancelled.

Swannanoa made first use of the wicket, with the 10 men of Kaiapoi taking the field. The first four overs featured Nate taking 21 runs off Cowboy, including four glorious boundaries, while Scotty was unable to take any runs off Sam at the other end.  At 0-22 after 4 overs (there was a wide), the mood in the clubhouse was optimistic of a large total looming despite Kaiapoi being able to rustle up an 11th fielder from somewhere.

However, perhaps more by chance than design, Cowboy was replaced by Daisy, and with Steve taking over from Sam the runs dried up from both ends. The wicket appeared to be offering extra bounce in the cold conditions and the bowlers, although not bowling particularly fast, were getting considerable movement through the air.

During this period, Scotty unfortunately prodded one in the air soon after getting off the mark, and Mike Hamilton was adjudged LBW by Pope. This LBW was the subject of spirited post-match debate between the two.

Despite this setback, Tim Parrott was able to settle in with Nate and see off those bowlers, going on to score more freely from Midget and Jason.
Nate brought up a fine half-century just before a 10-minute drinks break which was called by Kaiapoi after the 24th over (apparently, one of their players had to go).

Shortly after the break Nate was caught for 57 off Kaiapoi's 8th bowler, Wayne. The score was 103/3 in the 25th over, but period followed in which Wayne also collected Reece for 1 and cleaned out Tim for a well-made 35. When Pope fell to Steve soon after, the score was 133/7 after about 31 overs, and mood in the dressing room was much more somber.

Thankfully, Aussie came to the wicket and carted the Kaiapoi attack all around the park while Gordon held up the other end with a number of solid strokes. Midget and Jason both went for 17-run overs. Unforunately Gordon had to retire hurt with a calf strain shortly before the end, but Geoff was able to resume where he left off, and a sparkling cameo of 4 runs from the last ball of the innings from Mike Martin brought the total to 209.

After a hearty lunch, Kaiapoi strode out to bat. They perhaps wished they had not when Geoff rattled the stumps of Daisy with the first ball of the innings. A superb spell from Mike Hamilton at the other end left Kaiapoi reeling at 18/5 after six overs, Hamilton with the figures of 4/4.

However, the pair of Jabba and Lighty settled into a partership, putting on more than 50 runs for the sixth wicket. Despite bowling fairly tightly, Aussie was unlucky as a number of balls hit in the air were fractionally out of the reach of fielders, including one fairly simple catch being dropped.

Fortunately a sharp piece of fielding and some indecisive running saw Jabba run out for 32 as he set off for a second run and was sent back, but could not regain his ground before Scotty collected the throw and whipped the bails off.

With Trev falling during Nate's sharp spell and Aussie finally collecting Lighty in his sixth over, the end seemed imminent with the ten-man Kaiapoi at about 90/8. after 21 overs.

But what followed was a spirited rearguard action from the two juniours Taine and Mason (one of whom had played a junior game the same morning). Mike Martin was hit down the ground in his first over and despite an athletic effort from Andy Pope, the batsmen were able to run five. With McNabb offering up several leg stump full tosses and Pope being no more effective, the youngers put on about 30 runs in 5 overs.

Finally McNabb's strategy of hoping that the leg stump full tosses would be hit to a fielder paid off, with Reece's safe hands collecting the final wicket. Nobody was sure of the score since Kaiapoi had no scoreboard, but it was later found to be 134/9.

Round 5 - 6th November - Swannanoa 3RD 11 vs Oxford, Oxford

Just prior to play commencing, the Swannanoa Team stood for a minutes silence for Chris Marsh who died suddenly on Thursday aged 52.  Whilst Marsh only played a few seasons for the club he was a former adversary of Swannanoa for many years and his swashbuckling, ‘go for broke’ style saw many a Swannanoa attack peppered to the boundary.  He will always be remembered as a good bloke and we all enjoyed his company on and off the field.

Swannanoa won an important toss and inserted Oxford in to bat on a damp pitch.  Oxford, a team full of nicknames like Bowser, Crazy Hippo and Zip were soon in trouble and never really recovered from a slow start to battle their way to 99 for 8.

Tight bowling by the Swannanoa seamers did the trick. Mike Hamilton had the interesting figures of 0 -7 off eight overs (which included four overthrows!).  Keith (Aussie) Eletheriou relished the demotion to third grade to take 3 for 15 off 7 overs.

The chase commenced with the usually reliable openers being separated after 3 balls when Nathan Lang was caught out for a duck and when Andy Pope followed with the score at 25, the Oxford boys stated to get a little excited.

Enter the ‘little old master’, Lance Ryan playing his 30th year for the club and a 58 run partnership with Derek Scott saw the team home for a comfortable win with 18 overs to spare.

Ryan finished on 45 N O and Scott 14 NO.

Round 3 - 23rd October - Swannanoa 3RD 11 vs Rangiora, Swannanoa

After a first up win against Ohoka, the Noa 3rd's were looking forward to a crack at last years beaten finalists, Rangiora. Unfortunately the day didn't start too well with Rusty having to pull out. However his replacement Steve was known as a decent cricketer so all was not lost. Captain olsen lost the toss but got what he wanted anyway with The Noa in the field. Hamilton and Olsen started in decent nick with Rangiora none for 11 off four overs. Mike then picked up one of the openers for 3, and we attempted to apply pressure from there. Unfortunately the Rangiora team seemed to find a couple of extra players (we're not saying from where) and we proceded to get knocked round the park a bit. Clumsy hands didn't help with 3 catch's going down. Rangiora moved through to 106 for 4 and kept going for the big hits, some coming off, some falling just out of range. Good spells from Eddie and Tim P and an excellent spell from Nathan put some dents in their armour, but after 40 overs Rangiora had managed to put up a respectable 167. Certainly something to chase but not insurmountable.

Into batting and Nathan and Steve opened up. Both looked solid before Steve was bowled for 6. In strode "The Chippy" Derek Scott and things moved well through to Nathan falling with the score at 46. In strode Captain Olsen and things moved well until an unfortunate runout with Mike H (12) falling to the same problem. Mike M went out to have a crack and neeeded a runner after sustaining an injury in the first innings. However, his inability to understand the laws of cricket allowed him to be runout as well for 6. Jock was next up and with another runout things were starting to look very shaky. Dave Parrott was bowled for 0 and this really just left Tim Parrot and the ever present Scotty to attempt going for the win. At this point we required 7-8 per over so it was time to go for broke. However Tim fell while having a push outside off and Matt was bowled for 0 leaving Scotty stranded on 65. The Noa all out for 143, 24 short of victory.

So there we have it, we put up a brave fight and there really wasn't too much in it. (Just 2 Rangiora first graders... Did I just type that?) All agreed a great game that was played in great spirit, as is always the case with Rangiora. A Bye for us next week, a chance to freshen up before Oxford.

Round 2 - 16th October - Swannanoa 3RD 11 vs Ohoka, Mandeville

Turning up at Mandeville, we wondered whether there would be a game at all as the overhead conditions we were not favourable at all. Having said that the ground seemed dry and hard enough, a toss was had which Captain Geoff won and Ohoka were put into bat. Right from the outset the Swannanoa boys were  right on  target with Geoff bowling a maiden and Mike H nipping out Davey and Brown in his first over. Unfortunately from here Ohoka were able to build quite a reasonable start and got to the mid 70's before Lance and Tim P were able to pull it back and bowl the two free flowing batters. From here Swannanoa were able to restrict the run scoring a bit with debutant Matt McNab and Lance bowling well on the slow pitch and restricting as well as taking valuable wickets. Eddie T came on for one over and finished things off. Ohoka all out for 148. Not a bad total after an awful start, and certainly enough to make the Noa team sweat a little.

The Noa 3rd's started out with their standard opening partnership of Drake and Lang carrying on from last years final. Both looked very good early and the Noa made their way through to 73 before Nathan was bowled for an elegant 22. Martin was the next to step out on to the crease and offered several chances in the first couple of overs before starting to
feel a little bit more at home (and keeping Rusty on strike). Eventually Ohoka realised that all they had to do was bowl a full line and they'd have him, out for 22. Rusty kept on compiling runs and made a very nice 66 as well as offering the Ohoka boys some much deserved fielding practice. From here we only required 23 and made quite hard work of it. Dave Parrot ran himself out for 2, Matt Mcnab got an unfortunate duck and Scotty was out caught. However, despite our mini collapse, we now only required 4 to win with Eddie and Mike H seeing us home in the 37th over. For Ohoka, Coffey had the excellent figures of 7 overs, 3 maidens, 1 for 11. All at the age of 15. Was great to see such enthusiasm in the field and Ohoka must be one of the best fielding teams in the 3rd grade. Anyhow, a wins a win and the 3rd grade have started as we finished last season, victorious. Next week is Rangiora at The Noa. Bring it on.

Round 1 -  9th October  - rained out.
