Taupo Rugby Sub Union became an Incorporated Society in 1982 but was originally formed around 1912 when the Bay of Plenty Union extended its boundaries from Te Kaha to Taupo. With a mandate to promote and represent Taupo Districts many dedicated and passionate people have been instrumental in its success whilst affiliated to Bay of Plenty, Hawkes Bay and since 1986, King Country Rugby Football Union.

Rugby in Taupo today, is supported by four clubs who all have both senior and junior teams.
