Series Result - My Ride Mt Maunganui TRCC WInter Series 2025
Here is the final points tally for the Winter Series.
I can't think of a Winter Series where Andrew Lloyd has not been in the prize money, and he has taken out the overall win this year. Kat Shores took out 3rd place overall and 1st female. In the 2 lapper, Hadyn Vear managed to take the win.
Thanks to everyone who took part, and to those who helped run it (Lesley, Ray, Wim, Tony and assorted people with finish line cameras ) - it was a successful series and the weather mostly "played ball".
Thanks also to our sponsor, My Ride Mt Maunganui. John and Leonie are very good supporters of the club.

TRCC Winter Series Race 3 Results – 22 June 2019
The penultimate round of the Winter Series, held on the Shortest Day of the Year, was a bit light on numbers in the mid-field, but plenty of riders at either end of the handicap start.
After the usual pre-race ritual of excuses had been rolled out (man-flu, sore back, no training, too old, ride out was too hard), the start sheet was drawn up and riders allocated to bunches. The lack of mid-fielders would mean a long chase for the Scratch boys, but they seemed quietly confident that they were up to the task.
Everyone’s favourite corner marshall, Ray, was absent as he is recovering from an operation (all the best for a speedy recovery, Ray) and his replacement had gone AWOL, so Raewyne kindly stepped in at short notice. She headed off to the Maketu Road corner as we assembled the Limit riders on the start line.
Once again, the E Grade was starting with the Limit Lads. Much debate on the start line about what “E” actually stood for (E is for Excellent 😊). Talbot already had the adrenalin pumping, after being driven out to the race by his learner driver grandson, while Jackie was similarly pumped after the fast paced bunch ride out from Te Puke.
Weekend Warriors Bron and Andy were next off, quickly settling into a steady pace.
The break bunch was set off 30 seconds earlier than originally planned, due to the big gap to chase to Andy and Bron, and the Scratch bunch was also pushed forward the same amount, to avoid an overlap by the Limit riders.
Once again, Scratch did a flying first lap, closing up almost half the gap in just over 7km, despite Break also doing a quick lap.
Meanwhile, Jackie was The Little Engine That Could, deciding to see if she could foot it with the Limit bunch. She became the self proclaimed “Babe on the Back”, putting her wheel sucking skills a good workout.
At the halfway mark, the Weekend Warriors were at 2:10 down on the front of the race, Break was at 4:09, with Scratch breathing down their necks at 4:30.
Scratch blew through Break somewhere around the back of the circuit, with a number of riders opting to pull the pin next time through the finish line, all falling victim to the frenetic pace.
E Grade were finishing at this point – Jackie doing a PB to take first place (rolling through with the Limit Lads), and Talbot storming home to take the sprint for second place ahead of Pauline. Gentleman George was again credited with keeping the bunch together.
Bell lap had Scratch bearing down on the Limit group. But at the finish line, it was once again Jordans race, with Jamie and Andrew completing the podium. Most people were a couple of minutes quicker than the past two weeks, courtesy of lighter winds.
After a post-race debrief and a short game of “Where’s Jordans cellphone”, everyone scrambled to join the big group heading back to Tauranga (and smaller group to Te Puke).

Winter Series Race 2 Results - 15 June 2019
Another fine and sunny winters day in the Bay of Plenty, with less wind than last week, although it was blowing from a less helpful direction. Claims ranged from "not much of a tail wind", through "head wind the whole way round", right up to "it's absolutely brutal up the finish straight". Take your pick, the perception of the effect of the wind was possibly fitness related, all I know is that it was very pleasant standing at the finish line...
With a good number of extra riders this week, we couldn't rely only on the results from last week to do the handicapping. As usual, the largest group starts attracting more riders, with everyone hoping to minimise the time spent with their face into the wind. With the 4 min handicap group growing, they had their handicap trimmed back to 3 mins. An offer was made to split the group to better reflect the range of abilities, but the riders were thinking that was there was safety in numbers, rather than how it might play out at the end of the race.
With only four riders on Scratch, vs thirteen in Break, the gap was closed up a little more. A warning of what was about to transpire came when Jordan asked to be given time gaps each lap...
The E Grade started with the Limit riders, making another good size group to start the race.
At the end of the first lap, the E Grade had dropped back from the Limit bunch, opting to "have our own race". Greg Long trailed in a bit later and decided to flag it away, announcing that Jackie was going too fast. A comment that Jackie wants in writing, so it can go "straight to the pool room". The 8 min bunch was riding very smoothly, the Breaks were definitely at pace, but Scratch had already pulled in 50 seconds and were absolutely flying.
At 4 laps to go, the gap was down to just 30 seconds (one of the photos shows the gap).
3 laps to go and the catch had caused the Break group to split into two and the 8 min group was next in the sights of the faster group. Meanwhile, out at the front of the race, the Limit riders were still riding strongly. Liam decided to drop in for a drink and a chat, taking a "neutral Lap", hopping back in next time the break group came through.
2 to go and the Limit riders were looking good - no other riders in sight on Kelly Road, would this be their big day? It was also the finish for the E Grade. Pauline noted that George and Jackie had very sportingly kept the group together down Maketu Road the final time, but once into Kelly Road, it was everyone for themselves. George had learnt from last week, making sure he had a clear run to the finish to take the win, from Jackie and Pauline. Talbot was just behind, taking a whopping 8 minutes off his time from last week.
Into the bell lap, and the Scratch had made up a huge amount of ground on the Limit riders, now only about 30 seconds behind as the passed through the start/finish.
Final time into Kelly Road, a 9 person bunch hurtling towards the finish line, with Jordan again taking line honours, from Lachlan and Oliver. Gavin had managed to hang in with this group for the final lap, a great effort.
We'll make a few tweaks to the handicaps again next week, but with everyone finishing within a span of just over two minutes, it wasn't too bad.

Winter Series Race 1 - 8 June 2019
A fine, if rather blustery, winters day for the first race of the TRCC Winter Series. A few riders traveled up from Whakatane, a welcome boost to numbers that were a little lean due to some other events on this weekend.
Jackies ride from Te Puke turned out to be in a car, while Gregs group ride out from Tauranga was a party of one - he quickly asked Tony for a ride home rather than face a pretty brutal wind along the TEL cycleway.
Bribes (clearly labelled) were proffered and accepted - probably under false pretences, given it was a mass start race, so no handicaps to "adjust". However, the bar has been set for following weeks, just saying....
With everyone split into the two grades (Open and E Grade), they lined up on the start line, with Ray and his trusty flag heading off to the Maketu Road corner. After a few minutes delay while the fashionably late Jordan made his way down Kelly Road to take the start, we finally got racing underway.
The first lap saw the Open Grade pull away from the E Grade, with Keith being caught in no-mans land between the two groups, the first of many riders to end up doing a time trial.
Lap three saw the Open split into two groups, with Frans, Bron and Nigel all "opting" to time trial. The wind on the second half of Kelly Road, through to Maketu Rd made for tough going when on your own, even with a reasonable tail wind down Maketu Road.
By Lap 4, the Open grade was disintegrating into small groups of two or three, but by this time the E Grade had the finish line in their sights, Jackie and Pauline using Girl Power to box George in, relegating him to third place.
With one lap to go, Lachlan and Jordan were well clear of Jeremy, who had become another time trial rider. The rest of the group had managed to pull itself back together into a tidy group of six.
Jordan made easy work of the sprint, finishing well clear of Lachlan, and Jeremy a distant third.
All that remained was the post-ride debrief and a discussion on how the handicaps would look next week - see you there, Saturday 15th, 1.00pm start (12.20 Registration)

In case you've been waiting, we've finally done the points tally for the 2018 TRCC Winter Series. The good news is that the reasonably good numbers racing each week means that we can pay down to 6th place in the Open and 3rd place in the D Grade.

Winter Series Race 4 Results - 30 June.
A stunning winters day for the fourth and final round of the TRCC Winter Series - blue skies and plenty of sunshine. However, there was more of a breeze than last week and this proved to be a deciding factor in how the race played out.
Handicaps had been further tweaked, with the Scratch, 2 min and 3 min groups being turned into Scratch, 3 min and 5 minute. Not enough to offset the wind factor though. The only place there was a tail wind was through the shelter belts, everywhere else it was a cross/head wind, with "everyone in the gutter" on the long back straight down Kaituna Road.
Greg B and Murray both stepped up into faster groups this week - love it when riders take on a challenge, well done guys!
The Limit bunch (13 min) took the start line first. With the countdown on, another rider was spotted coming up Te Tumu Road, so pause was pushed while Joseph leapt out of the car, grabbed his bike and pushed his way into the middle of the bunch. They rolled away from the line, unfortunately some riders were slow clipping in, there was a touch of wheels and Joseph was on the deck. No damage done, they were all off again, a case of third time lucky as the 13's rolled around into Kelly Road.
The 5 min bunch was rather thin in numbers, and Sam announced he was only doing 3 laps due to another engagement elsewhere (something more important than cycling??), so they certainly had their work cut out, despite the extra minute.
Next off was the D Grade - just three riders this week, so no rest for anyone in that group. Their goal, to beat the 4 lappers to the finish line.
The 3 minute bunch set off without incident, other than Michael missing his start by about a minute.
Finally the Scratch bunch - 3 minutes to go and Lachlan realised his front tyre was going flat. It was all hands to the pump (no pun intended...) as everyone tried to get the tube changed. Great to have friends in a crisis. However, at the call of 30 seconds to start, Lachlan suddenly found he had no friends and he was abandoned to his fate as everyone else hit the road. Clinton stepped in with a decent pump and Lachlan was underway, 1 min & 49 secs after the others, deciding to see if he could time trial back on.
3 laps to goThe 5's had only taken 1 minute out of the 13s, the 3s had closed a minute as well, and the Scatch boys had already halved the gap to the 3s. Lachlan still time trialling and he had clawed back 30 seconds, but 1 rider vs 9 is a big ask.
2 laps to goThe 13 continued to hold the lead, but the three bunches behind them were all about to come together. A big group would form on the 3rd lap for sure.
1 lap to go.Scratch had gone through the two groups in front of them, and with the cross wind on Kaituna, there was quite a bit of collateral damage as riders struggled to find shelter at the back of the bunch. The 13s had four minute still up there sleeve, but the Scratch riders looked to be well in control.
FInishWhile the Open riders were battling it out, the three D Graders had kept their heads down and were flying under the radar - seems the Scratch boys may have been unaware they were still ahead of them. Brenda, Jackie and Pauline were over the bridge and onto the finish straight, their efforts rewarded by taking line honours, with exactly 1 minute of clean air between them and the fast finishing Scratchies. In the end, we had just over 20 riders finish in the space of about 2 minutes.
In the Open, Glen took first place from Michael and James, sealing First Place for the Series, winning $100. The other placings for the series will be confirmed shortly, we hope we have enough cash to pay some additional places beyond 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall.
Thanks to Ray for keeping everyone safe at the turn onto Maketu Road and to Clinton for acting as pit crew!

Winter Series Race 3 Results - 23 June 2018.
The first race after the winter solstice brought 42 riders out to Te Tumu for Race 3 of the TRCC Winter Series. Conditions were pretty good, with some sunny periods and a light head wind on Kaituna Road. Chris Willett delivered a whole set of junior Triathlon riders to Te Tumu Road, which boosted numbers to 42. Most of these folk were doing a big run on Sunday, so ended up stopping after 3 laps.
The handicaps were tweaked after Race 2, with an extra minute between the Limit riders (starting first) and the boys on Scratch. The D Grade were squeezed in ahead of Scratch this time, with the aim of getting them to cross the finish line with the Open race riders. Not sure if any of this was related to the bar of chocolate that appeared near the starters stop watch....
Murray O'Donnell opted to use his time trialling skills instead, riding off the front of the D Grade on his own, to finish 4 minutes and 2 seconds ahead of the Open peleton.
Several other riders set themselves a challenge as well, with Max and Ali moving up to the 2 min group, and Hayley taking the leap to the 8 min group. Unfortunately the 8 min group was only 3 riders and it split apart quite early on, leaving Hayley as another person who time trialled most of the race.
The 2 min group had caught the 3 min's by the end of the first lap, and this large group then set their sights on the Limit riders. By half way through the race, they had whittled down the 10 minute gap to just 3m30s, and had reeled them with 1 lap to go.
In the end, it all came together rather nicely, a pelaton of 20 riders crossing the line together, with a mix of riders from every group, including 4 of the D Graders. The downside of this was that it was rather tricky to judge, even with the camera running. I think I've got most people in the correct placing, other than Anna and Oliver. If they, or anyone else thinks they are in the wrong spot, let me know and we'll correct the result.
This week we had some spot prizes, two of which were kindly donated by Andrew Jamieson of Fitlab. The winners of the two $150 Fitlab assessments were Paul McLeod and Hannah Wells. The other spot prize was a UCI Womens World Tour commemorative tee shirt from the Tour of Chongming in China, which was won by Pauline Schrafft.
Following comments that the camera angle was making some peoples backsides look big, this weeks video footage is taken from the front/side. 😏Winter Series Race 3 (Handicap Start)23 June 2018

Winter Series Race 2 Results - 16 June 2018.
Reasonable conditions for Race 2, with just the odd light shower of rain skirting the edges of the race circuit. Although numbers were similar to last week (37 this week, 35 last week), only around half of those have done both races.
A good number of newbies today, as well as a few that have not been out for a while. All in all, a good mix of riders, meaning we were able to put together some good bunches, including in the D Grade.
After everyone admired (?) Cullens pink bike, the 12 min group (7 riders in total) saddled up, with Ray racing out in front of them to marshall the Maketu Rd intersection.
With 9 minutes on their hands before the next group started, some riders headed off for a warm up, only to return after their group had started. Other passed the time by suggesting changes to the handicaps (note for next time - the handicapper likes chocolate...). A flurry of activity as the clock counted down saw Max and Ali move forward to the 3 min bunch, Cullens long warm up pushed him back to 2 minute group, Bobby's warm up rolling him back to the 1 min group, while Steve Neil split the difference and frantically chased his group up the road after starting 30 seconds late after closely inspecting the shelter belt.
After looking at the firepower in the 1 minute group, they were secretly pushed back to become a 30 second group (although someone did say "this seems like a long minute"). With all the four lappers on the road, the D Grade were next off, their goal to complete their three laps without getting caught.
The groups stayed pretty much as they started, for the first two laps, but the 2's caught the 3's soon afterwards. The 12's were putting in a very good ride, and with a lap to go, it looked that they might pull off the win. The 0.30's were not quite on the back of the combined 2's/3's, but as always, they always seem to exactly what needs to be done to get through the field.
Meanwhile, the D grade were battling to stay clear of the Open riders, but found that Kaituna had become a swampy version of Pamplona, complete with the Running of the Bulls - a rampant cow loose on the road, causing them to take evasive action. Jackie highly recommends disc brakes, by the way!
The entire field came together on the last lap, as per plan, and it was a massive bunch coming down the finish straight. Jordan took out the win (starting from the 2 min group), from Ali (3 min group) and Glen (0.30 group). This meant that Glen took out fastest time for the day. Almost all the riders finished within 1 min 30 seconds
All that remained was the traditional post-race analysis, and a further discussion about Cullens bike (picture of it crossing the finish line attached). A great way to spend a winters afternoon.

ace 1 of the Winter Series was held on a perfect Bay of Plenty winters day out at Te Tumu - light winds, plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures. 35 riders started together, the first race being mass start to determine handicaps for the next 3 races.
A forgotten broom meant that riders had to negotiate the first turn into Kelly Road very carefully - plenty of loose metal on the road, although Michael Wotton had managed to clear a narrow path through it before we got underway.
Ray was on duty at the corner of Maketu Road, getting everyone safely through the intersection each lap.
Rick Lowe was off the front of the big bunch early on, with a few others joining him as the race progressed. By the end of the third lap, the bunch had split into three main groups.
The final sprint by the front group started very early - "basically started at the bridge" according to Rick. Certainly, these four were battling it out all the way down the finish straight, but it came down to a photo finish (well, would have, had we had camera running for this group) between Scott and Andrew. The finish judges gave the win to Scott, but there would hardly have been a tyre width in it.

Results – Round 4 of the Winter Series, 7th July
Race 4 of the Winter Series was held last Saturday, in fine but rather breezy conditions. 40 riders all up, with a very classy Scratch bunch, including our new NI Schools U20 champ, Nik Ansorge, our Subway Pro Cycling team member Simon Binney, Tauranga Club Champion Daniel Molyneux, plus Heath Lett, Louis Wright, Andrew Lloyd, Michael Pugh and young Tom Carter. Louis took out the fastest time, in just over 55 minutes.
Quite a few riders improved their times in this final race of the series.
The final sprint was hotly contested, with a last second burst from Greg & Rachael Kilgour on the tandem pipping Allan Giles and Deidre Lack on the line. The bulk of the field arrived in within 3 minutes of the podium place getters, so the handicapping wasn’t too bad. A few had chosen to put themselves on a harder mark, which proved to be their undoing. I always figure if you get a good handicap, take it, it will make up for the dud one that you might get another time. Lucas Fairweather has proved himself to be something of a sprinter during the winter series, usually finishing at the front of his group.
The ride was followed by refreshments at The Funky Lizard Cafe at Paengaroa, a spot sheltered from the wind and the late afternoon sun making it a pleasant end to the series.
The overall Open series winners were Allan Giles 1st, Deidre Lack 2nd and Rainer Ansorge 3rd, with Jessica Ansorge taking out the U15 race. The prizes will be posted out shortly.

Results – Round 3 of the Winter Series, 23th June
38 competitors signed on for Race 3 of the Winter Series held at Paengaroa on 23 June 2012. Weather conditions were fine, warm, with little wind which made for ideal cycling.
As a result of very good handicapping from Mark Ireland there was less than 1½ minutes between the winner of the 3 lap event and 24th place.
Riders from the 10 minute group featured in the sprint finish with this group no doubt being helped by the addition of Sue Galpin into the group.
Line honours went to Rainer Ansorge from Ryan Pratt and Sue Galpin.
In the under 15's line honours went to Natasha Colins from Jessica Ansorge and Theo Wright.
Theo Wright recorded a time of 38 minutes 56 seconds for the 2 laps and kept up with a group of very competitive cyclists for the 2 laps who started in the break group.

Results – Round 2 of the Winter Series, 16th June
The second race of the winter series was held on Saturday 16 June 2011. The cyclists were greeted to fine sunny conditions with a bit of a breeze. Thirty riders signed on with five start times following the first race being set. With the exception of race winner Stewart Turner, the five groups largely stayed together and it was not until late in the race that the four leading riders on 20 minutes reeled in the field. Stewart on the other hand went hard from the gun rode on his own and managed to stay clear of the field to record a dominant win. Heath Lett recorded the fastest time to finish second overall outsprinting Nik Ansorge and Tom Carter. Natasha Collins won the under 15 race from Jessica Ansorge with Tom Carter winning the u 17 race from Lucas Fairweather.

RESULTS Winter Series Race 1 – 9th June
Wind – Westerly 22km/h, gusts to 37km/h
Fine & 14 deg
Race 1 was a drama filled event – 34 starters on the line, with one or two riders turning up with only seconds to spare. At the end of Lap 1, Heath Lett, Andrew Lloyd and Tom Carter had a 20 second break on the front bunch of 12 riders, which they steadily built on over the next 26km. Nik Ansorge had his usual trouble on this circuit – a puncture, but his dad Rainer was quickly on the scene and gave him his rear wheel, allowing him to get back on the road quickly. However, the gears weren’t meshing too well and he was unable to make any ground on them, slowing significantly in the last lap.
Martin Horne and Stewart Turner took a scenic tour down Kelly Road on lap two, but returned to the circuit for lap 3.
Unfortunately for the big front bunch, there was a touch of wheels on the final lap near the end of Kaituna Road, resulting in big crash. A number fell heavily, with Paul Gurrin smashing his helmet. Fortunately, it appears that no-one suffered any major injury, but it certainly put paid to any proper finish for this group. Accordingly, the race Commissaire has decided to award all riders in this bunch (and Nik) with the same points, so that they are all on a level playing field for the next race. A big thanks to everyone in this group for stopping and helping the injured.
Thanks too to Angela Carter, Richard Bates and Mark Ireland for doing the timekeeping & judging.
