ELLIS SPEEDBALL CUP

Played between Waikanae, Plimmerton and Paraparaumu.  The Ellis Cup was donated by Peter Ellis a business man on the Kapiti Coast. He was interested in promoting an event that was both fun and energetic – hence the speedball competition between the three Clubs.

"Speedball" is a limited form of croquet with a team of four playing against the clock. Peter Ellis, who donated the Speedball Cup, is a remarkable athlete, now into his 70s. A harrier, cyclist, swimmer, triathlete and ironman - but, he says, "I've never played croquet in my life"! While he was at the helm of Sport Kapiti he was involved in introducing young, and the not so young, to as many sports as possible.  In 2002, on one of his rounds he visited the Paraparaumu Croquet Club where speedball was being played. He so enjoyed seeing a sport being played with fun and laughter he decided then and there to donate the "Ellis Speedball Cup". It's been contested ever since by Plimmerton, Paraparaumu and Waikanae teams."
